This is Doug's attempt to "make more room for researchers".

All of that cargo is completely unsecured. What boat is that considered okay on? He even has tapped hard points in the floor to thread bolts into to hold onto straps (or presumably a cargo net) but he'd just leaving what is probably thousands of pounds of gear and junk loose in the hold to slide across the floor.

Is this your first time seeing the hold area?

Did you know that he has a lathe? Have you not seen the cool CNC machine? What about the new welder?

And did I mention the lathe?

It is not, It's just still remarkable.

The "lathe" is a lathe attachment for the CNC which I believe is actually bolted down.

Doug laughs...he see's your/our doug derangement syndrome has us just where he wants us. We sometimes slip and acknowledge his design/build prowess but choose to see the current state as a failure. Doug is the master of energy economy, why would he bother securing the load when he his securely laying at incredible home built anchor? Do you think he was raised by a woman? Soon Doug will spring the trap...tomorrow or a month from tomorrow, only Doug knows, he'll dinghy over 4 bright eyed, well funded researchers, they'll strap the load down, hoist full sail and blast out into the Gulf, next stop Cancun. He will post a parting video chiding mother-loving internet trolls; Spittoon will post that he told us so. The next video will be their triumphant arrival in Mexico where we learn that at least one of the researchers is a fetching 20-something post doc with a penchant for tiny bikinis. We will be finally humbled.

This is spectacularly bad structure design by the way. Deep beams have a tendency to "trip". They buckle sideways. Supporting the web is good. Not having those supports the full depth of the beam is bad. Not having a flange on the beam is very inefficient.

And then he has an I beam right behind the mast?? I guess it's not my place to second guess marine genius in action.

No, it's not and Doug will thank you to stop.

That I-beam seems to have a cut out in the lower flange to make space for the mast. Presumably the upper flange of the same I beam has it as well. Cutting half of the Section modulus out in the place with the largest bending moment. Seems really smart!

WTF is "1294896" on the remnant of the I-beam?

It matters not the slightest whether it is really smart or not. What counts is that Dugg likes that. Why? Because he is a man possessed of deep knowledge in all things maritime, including but not limited to, engineering, naval architecture, finite material analysis, design and sunsets. He reaches out to aquatic life and forges instant life-long bonds with all creatures large and small, even those inhabiting his shroud and rudder. Dugg has not seen a boat yet on the water whereby all the crew are granted immediate friend status, and all this without once exchanging a single spoken word. Hardly a day passes when Dugg does not share with us his enviable vision of the world and its inhabitants. He is truly a mans man.
It should not trouble anyone that how I describe Dugg is but an abbreviated string of unvarnished, unmitigated and uncensored lies. Dugg has trained us well!

I unironically think that this is something Doug is good at. People keep calling him stupid just because he does things the hard way and gets shitty results, but I think it's a personality problem not an intellect problem. He's really good at manipulating people into getting worked up over things and then doing a reveal to make the people he wound up look like the bad guys. It's no small wonder his family won't talk to him anymore.

Indeed not. After all, what would you know about designing boats? 😁

That is the USCG documentation number. While he might have it documented as an inspected passenger vessel, I doubt he actually has a certificate of inspection (COI). Those unsupported wiring runs and wire nuts by themselves are a fail, not to mention other issues a plenty.

He has it documented as an inspected passenger vessel?? WTAF? There's no way in hell that it has ever passed an inspection and has a valid COI - I can't even imagine how badly that inspection would go given Doug's antipathy to authority and disregard for rules.
Edit: I wonder if anyone has mentioned to the nearest Florida coast guard station that there is a "inspected" passenger vessel in their waters without a COI...

USCG documentation is not the same thing as USCG inspected vessel. He has sort of painted himself into a corner between his goals and achievements.
