Classic Dugg. Rather than fix his overweight fuckup he'll move on to another self-fucking project.

Question; will the bigger job time and cost wise be:
Building a barge from scrap scratch.
Or
Putting SV Seeker on the hard and installing a marine transmission, proper shaft tube, conventional propeller and removing the nozzle. A sanitary marine head too.

Replumbing, rewiring, rerigging, reducing the pilothouse footprint, proper hull frames and hanging knees would put the refit over the top.

It would be cool if he welds it up underwater. His above surface welds suck pretty hard, he might as well try welding below surface.

Then he could float it to the surface by filling it with a couple of container's worth of ping pong balls.

Then he could put some government surplus FEMA trailers on it.

And with the FEMA trailers he'd have his own little portable Oklahoma.

Funny thing is that this is on Facebook Marketplace from a home right adjacent to where Doug has chosen to anchor in Santa Rosa Sound in Fl. Worse than rats abandoning a sinking ship!

Youtube is his only source of income I think - I don't know if he's old enough for Social Security. Does he do Patreon? I doubt the merch brings in anything. He has to keep people watching something and the last thing the youtube sailing community wants to watch is actual sailing. Not that he can provide that content. So it's a logical next step to build something - anything - to keep subscribers.

I was watching James from Triteia - he has 106K subscribers and about 400 videos, and he says he makes about $3500 a month from youtube. That's frankly more than I thought. Even if Doug makes $1000 a month I'm sure he doesn't want to kiss it goodbye especially as he'll probably have to hire a lawyer in future months. Something bad's going to happen, I think we can all see that coming.

He had an IT job for 20 years which gave him a pension, he has referenced investments in oil and gas, he claims 2k/month from Patreon, I think it was 1,400 before he went dark with it and that's before he started pushing early video access through patreon.

He is ~61 or 62 years of age.

He also uses Amazon affiliate links and has an amazon storefront.

Say some well meaning innocent gets hurt on the BSO. They sue Dugg and the judge awards them Dugg's only thing of value, S V Seeker.
Wouldn't that be a fine kettle of fish?

Edit: My implication is that after our well meaning innocent gets hurt on the BSO, his award punishment would be being saddled by ownership of the BSL (boat shaped liability).

He’s well covered bro. Everyone knows you can’t be a pussy on the sinker. If you get hurt, it’s because you’re a pussy, and that my friend is as solid as it gets legally speaking.

He did an "AMA" (ask me anything) on reddit just 8 months ago - it didn't go very well for him. He assumed it would be all his "fans" from FB. Instead, Reddit came out and ruined his happy little party he was about to have where people would throwing praise on him- that didn't happen. Reddit bent him over and made him regret that decision.

Both he and Betsy were fielding the questions and answering them. The topic of insurance and injury came up and they avoided the questions until they couldn't avoid it anymore. The final word from them was - and I'm paraphrasing here - that if you are a "friend" of Doug and the boat, he'd pay your ER/urgent care bill. If not, you should have your own insurance when you get on the boat. They punted at the question of serious injury or death.

No talk of how one would know if you were a "friend" or not beforehand - so you just have to hope you don't get hurt? Not sure how that works. I suspect that depends on a combination of how big the bill was, and how much brown you have on your nose.

Small bill and face covered in brown, and you're good. Big bill and a normal amount of brown, you are out of luck.

You can read the entire train wreck here - but I don't recommend it - it's skippable.

Can someone give me the low down on why everyone is shitting all over this guy and his project?

Skipped through a few of his videos. Don't get the hate.
It's the huge investment of time, money and relationships that people have put into learning about the infinitesimal art of boat building and maintenance. It's painful to keep slapping one's forehead seeing him "learning the hard way".

Doug didn't have the advantage of growing up in a sea faring family or nautical environment, or spending his life on boats. He skipped all that and just went ahead and made a boat. The way I see it is he had 2 other choices:
(a) Spend a few decades learning about boat building
(b) Give up on the idea

Given he's in the latter part of life (a) was not an option. And most people would have taken option (b) but not Doug, love him or hate him for that.

There could even be an option (c) which is to go more slowly and get more expert advice. But he probably would not have seen started welding plates in that case.

I'm a little like Doug. Worked in IT for years. Bought a boat and thought I knew what I was doing. Within 2 weeks I fetched up on rocks and the boat is a total loss. Should I have got more advice before setting off? Absolutely. Do I know anyone who could have given me advice? No.
