Each of the super Maxis were in a position to win at different times during the race. Tactics and positioning won the race and WO XI  are masters at this race.  I wouldn’t write off any of the boats especially Comanche. The way she power reached to the lead after the first turning mark at the heads was impressive to me.  I was happy to see that because my 18’er has a relatively fat rear also.

Fantastic race from the big boats. Looking forward to seeing the IRC results. AIS should be on, it's a safety feature.

Quote from the paper re M3's dismasting.

"M3 Team Hungary's sailing master Bret Perry said the incident happened in 25 knots around sunset the first night of the race. Perry said a spinnaker was being trimmed and got an override on the winch which locked the sheet on. In a gust, the boat suffered a knockdown with the mast laid over and on the water. The spinnaker filled with water, the boat came up, went over again and the mast snapped"

also, given the closeness of the racing in this race.., if one boat can jibe away with the other boats not knowing about it for 10min.., but no one else has that ability.., that's an advantage...

like i said above  - it would be dick move to protest and no one will.., but it's also not that cool to be putting your competitors in a situation where they have to sit around and debate whether a particular infraction deserves a protest. this one is pretty obvious.., and the debate wouldn't have been a long one.., but why screw around? just follow the rules - probably 99% of the boats managed it...

WOXI's AIS was showing on the boat I was on before, during and after the start but not showing on Marine Traffic.

It’s the race committee’s responsibility to enforce the safety rules. How many of us have heard of boats getting protested for having too much lifeline deflection? For failing to file a piece of paperwork?

Not only was it a safety risk but the competitors were placed at a disadvantage when Oats could get a 10 minute jump on maneuvers while still being able to follow the movements of their competition.

I'll be shocked and embarrassed if anyone protests over such a thing.  Oats earned their victory and they should savor it.

The Race Committee dont protest for paperwork issues, they just dont accept the entry until it is corrected.  RC also dont protest for loose lifelines, that comes from another competitor.

I had a buddy in the Chi-Mac years ago and to climb onto the podium, the owner of the 4th place boat protested the 3rd place boat for not having a lit stern light.  At the protest meeting, they called my buddy who steered most of the night and asked him about it, "I could see where they were clear as day."  Protest over and never invited back.  This smells about the same if Oats is protested and I do not have a dog in this fight.

I imagine the "99%" is truly relating to this suffering and trauma of a family that pours millions of dollars into this sailing campaign each year. Finally redemption in the ROLEX Sydney to Hobart race. Talking about bringing sailing to the masses. And yes, I am ironic and no I am not a WOXI hater. I spread the little love I have for these super maxis equally among all of them.

Val Oatley described Wild Oats XI’s Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race line honours victory perfectly alongside the dock in Hobart this morning: “Three years of misery to this moment,” and you could not wipe the smile from her face or that of her sons, Sandy and Ian, as they waited for their super maxi to moor alongside Kings Pier.
Watching four super maxis dicing from the start of the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia’s 628 nautical mile race, Sandy Oatley commented: “I was very nervous watching the tracker last night – isn’t this a wonderful sight…"

Three years of trauma for the Wild Oats family when the yacht retired from the 2015 race with a torn main followed by Bob Oatley’s death in January 2016. Another retirement in 2016, this time with hydraulic ram issues. Then came last year’s much publicised finish when Wild Oats XI was penalised one hour after an incident with Comanche and lost her line honours crown and a new race record to Jim Cooney’s ‘aircraft carrier’.

On Vessel Finder their last AIS transmission was 2 hours before the start off Bradleys Head. Could be the Russians.
