Sydney to Hobart 2020

For the 2020 race, set a rectangular way point race. 15 miles out, turn right 300 down, turn right 15 miles in, turn right 300 miles back up to Sydney.

The Oatley Trophy for line honours, the Halvorson trophy for overall. Have the presentations on the Opera house steps, for distancing.

Channel 7 have to have a large silver boat doing something.

Sadly I don't think anything can be done for the small traders of Hobart/Tasmania.

Sydney, around Tasmania (either direction is allowed) and back to Sydney

Might not be finished by New Year and possibly too far for the maxis (they would need to have a watch system. Do they even have bunks?)

Do they even have big enough diesel tanks for a trip like that?!?

Melbourne to Melbourne with Tasmania to starboard.

Sponsored by Golden Fleece

So search Golden Fleece Great Circle Race

There is a really good old documentary on the first race.

Won by Challenge 11 then Siska followed by Superstar.

Elapsed time of 5 1/2 days for challenge

Second Race was very tough and don't think there was another

Sporty will know.

Plenty of pics of Dunc's boat from back then.

I used to be against the CYCA's conservative stance and was supportive of opening up the race to multis. However this incident south of Sydney last year shows that the CYCA is correct to not allow multis. Multi idiots need to be protected from their own stupidity.

I heard that the owner changed the bow profile, perhaps in the hope of reducing the problem that caused them to flip. Just sounds like putting lipstick on a pig.
That's a solid effort ....

I tried....
Sorry for the late response.... I was out sailing on Saturday and after a great race I may have indulged a tad to much ....... I'm awake now
Carry on

Looking less likely by the day

Prime Minister Morrison said he had hoped COVID-19 restrictions, including border closures, would have been resolved by Christmas, but he now doubts that will happen.

Damn we were young!! Lou & the Challenge team with Budgie at the mast....Dave LeRoy...S&S34s and Swanson 36's....vinyl wet weather gear meant we were wetter on the inside than the outside....and some great footage of just how slow beating in these boats was in big seas....how lucky to have been part of this era!

Hey Scanas - where'd you dig this up from? It's GOLD! I just sent a link thru to some mates who are loving the nostalgia...so many good stories!!

Listen, there's mythical footage out there of a Hobart that was a bit rugged...early/mid 80's...done (I think?) by the ABC....covered an interview of the crew of Joint Venture after we'd smashed every ring frame and limped back to Eden...I had a VHS copy (courtesy of Fletch) but it's gone missing and I'm scouring the internet for it without success...

Anyone with info leading to its discovery will be well rewarded!!!

Couta standing bye......

Maybe the ORCV might need to consider planning for a return of the GCR if the M2D & M2H can't be run.

If Vic gets over it's current mess and Tassie remains closed, maybe the NSW/Vic travel will be back and the race might attract a couple of S2H boats.

I just plugged "Golden Fleece Great Circle Yacht Race" into youtube so can't help with a copy.

I had seen the video years ago.

will keep looking for some more, so I would say 1984 as that was fresh, had heaps of footage of Bewinched getting slammed.

Have you seen "GoFast, go North"

It is on Prime

Classic but now.

5 young blokes and 13 days on an Olsen 30 racing the RaR

I am chasing the VHS of 1999 Hobart, I had a copy buy it got "borrowed"
