Team American Magic

I got a North's newsletter the other day, and it said they were supplying sails for all the syndicates.

I guess that AM still has to use the old gear to keep it's Legacy boat status as I've only seen photos of it out with the structured luff sails, but with the "Quantum powered by American Magic" announcement the other week I would have assumed AM was still a Quantum (Doyle supplied) boat?

They'd better find some decent sea swell though.
Right now they have the perfect conditions to test design and technique variables. GB, Artemis or LR wish they had the conditions to get in the sailing time that AM will be get in the over the next few months.

No need to add in the sea swell variable while they are still dialing in on other processes.
They still have plenty of time to deal with that when they move to Barcelona.

They had the most amount of sailing days last time, but it didn't help them in the end.

But they don't have a boat to test with. At this stage that's more important, and Ineos do have such (and LR can tow test).

If Ineos wanted sailing practice they have a boat they could use (their last Ac75)
I think you are not giving the AM enough credit for their approach so far. They are testing several items in their boat (boomless sail, cyclors, all new controls, etc...). The only thing they can not test is changes to the foils.

AM will be the only team with full size system development and training that will translate directly to the new AC75. (yes, Artemis is also making modifications to NZ B1, but they are dealing with learning how to sail an AC75 and with rough sea states that all make it much more difficult.)

It is not only about sailing days (like the other poster talked about practice sailing), but it is about refining techniques and systems. AM had arguably one of the fastest boats last time, but had obvious control system problems.

I wonder if North are using a bit of 'artistic license' by basing this on the fact the AC40s come with North sails as part of the OD package so by extension they're powering part of the AM fleet?
Otherwise it's a bit of a punch in the gut for Doyle... (AFAIK the plan was still for Doyle to build the sails, not sure if they were going to be Quantum badged as they stopped this cross branding on all other classes such as Maxis and TPs)

Would be a bit of a stretch, they mentioned engineering/design staff embedded in all the teams. Surely not for the ac40 ?

Would not be the first time that a competitor of a sponsor was engaged by a team or athlete. Sometimes sponsors re-brand competitor's products to please a team or an athlete.

North Sails, which has powered every America’s Cup winner since 1987, is proud to be the sailmaker of choice for all entries participating in the 37th America's Cup. The five teams signed up to compete are NYYC American Magic (USA), Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team (ITA), Alinghi Red Bull Racing (CHE), Challenger of Record INEOS Britannia (GBR), and Defender Emirates Team New Zealand (NZL).

The world’s leading sailmaker will supply each team with 3Di sail technology, aero engineers, and exclusive access to the North Design Suite, the most advanced sail design and aero simulation tools in the industry.

"This event is the pinnacle of our sport and proving ground for sailing technology," explains Ken Read, President of North Sails and North Technology Group. “Each team will take a unique approach in their quest to win the Cup, and our proven ability to firewall each team from each other creates fascinating development paths. Because of this, North Sails keeps learning and is constantly climbing the ladder in terms of product development. It is an incredible resource for the teams and in turn, our business.”

For North Sails, the America’s Cup fast-tracks the design and engineering evolution, where designers work with aero and hydro as one. With each Cup cycle, North Sails advances its learnings for commercially viable innovations for all sailors. Whether for day sailors or Grand Prix programs, the trickle-down effect is unmatched.

It was all happening in Pensacola yesterday, the perfect winter training venue for the New York Yacht Club American Magic team who continued their relentless training programme aboard the modified Patriot with another long session in near-perfect conditions and dolphin sightings. Beneath high cloud, on a perfectly smooth Bay and a gentle 5-8 knots of breeze all afternoon, the Americans revealed their re-cut MN-B1 mainsail, adapted for the boomless set-up and hydraulic clew, with a slightly bigger sail area to give them additional horse-power in the take-offs. Paul Goodison who was helming all day today, crossing the stern with athleticism, seemed pleased with progress: “Obviously we had our new mainsail up today and we were basically trying to figure out what the wind range of that sail against the other (main) sail was…we only had to tow up twice which was obviously quite different to what we’ve been doing so far, so quite a successful day.” And he continued: “We can still be really productive on the light days. Thinking ahead to Barcelona there’s going to be a lot of light, choppy days, so refining the systems for those sorts of conditions is going to be really important.”

What are the conditions outside the barrier islands like at Pensacola?
Closest buoy is just down the coast about 10-20 miles, 3 ft waves right now. They could easily take the boat out of the bay and go find some waves.

I guess I dont understand enough about the behind the scene stuff. Or maybe North's software and construction processes are so advanced that Quantum is ok with AM using North instead of Q?

I have no idea whatsoever about any arrangement, but in the past, North and Quantum weren’t the enemies you’d expect. I used to take care of the personal boat for the owner of North Sails. When we’d fly our crew in to Michigan for a race, the plane almost always got serviced, and or parked in the Amway hanger.

I don't know anything about this either, but couldn't it be possible that Quantum is buying 3Di-membranes from North, but design the sails themselves? A bit like in the old days, when ambitious sailmakers bought the best sailcloth they could find on the market. If so, I wouldn't hold that against them. They do, after all, call themselves Quantum sail DESIGN group, don't they?
