If American Magic took the boat out of the Pensacola Pass which is within sight of where they are trialing in the Bay they will find enough swell most of the time to get they practice they need in waves. Not a lot of surf here on the Northern Gulf but here is the closest webcam I could find to the pass. Foggy here today on the Redneck Riviera.

This live video cam is about 12 miles further West from Pensacola and maybe they will clean the lens after there early morning rains as a low passes through.

Ah! This is the cam I was looking for. Just West of Perdido Pass and right across the bayou and beach from my fishshack. Pretty typical small surf for this part of the Gulf. The surf gets pretty blown out when the sea breeze gets up but just what they need for later practice. I love sailing along this coast when we get offshore breezes. They push the surface waters out to the South in the Gulf and clean turquoise waters well up from the deep which contrasts so nice against our 'sugar sand' (quartz) beaches.

Here is a cam view that really shows our beach conditions best. Light offshore breeze early before the land warms and the seabreeze starts. Small dying surf from the front that passed through and you can see the jettys at Perdido Pass just a couple miles West of the Ala-Fl state line. Camera looking East and I'm about a half mile north of this condo tower on the small bayou inside the beach strand.

I have no idea whatsoever about any arrangement, but in the past, North and Quantum weren’t the enemies you’d expect. I used to take care of the personal boat for the owner of North Sails. When we’d fly our crew in to Michigan for a race, the plane almost always got serviced, and or parked in the Amway hanger.
That may be, however, it can't be a good look for the team owned by the owners of Quantum Sails to be using North IP, personnel and equipment.

Yes and no. It could be be great PR for everyone to have two American companies team up to help an American team bring the Cup home.

Definitely! While they're at it they need to highlight all the Australians on the team. It really should be rebranded as Team Australian North Sails Magic. You know, for PR.

And so far, absolutely nothing has been said about the North partnership by AM.

Either way, I’m cool. I take a lot of pride in seeing boats powered by North Sails cleaning up. However, all the Quantum folks I’ve met were all great people. I’m happy either way.

I think the biggest losers here are Doyle - they were the ones designing and building the sails used by AM in the last cycle and are trying very hard to push Stratis as a competitor against 3Di in the grand-prix circuits, this move by AM to north isn't exactly a ringing endorsement....

I doubt they’re out of the game. We’re all just speculating based on an advertising email.

I’m not sure sailmaker brands matter at all in the Americas cup any more. Other than a distinctive logo, the sails used on these boats don’t matter much at all to the general sail buying public. How many boats need twin skin mains?

I think it matters a ton! Marketing works. It's why people think they need 3Di to power their 30 year old 4ksb when a well designed and built dacron main would win plenty of races.

I know marketing works, it just seems to me that it’s not very likely what brand is on AC boat of this generation means anywhere near as much as it used to, particularly in the mid 70’s when the guys with the two biggest sailmaking companies were driving their own boats.

Speak with wise-heads in and around the America’s Cup and many will point towards the sailing programme being executed out in Pensacola, Florida by the New York Yacht Club American Magic Team as the blueprint to winter training. Terry Hutchinson, skipper and President of Sailing Operations was delighted with the day saying: “Obviously we were sailing the boat up-range and it was good to see Tom and Goody (Paul Goodison) interacting in that regard as the last time we sailed the boat in these conditions it was quite a handful.”

from there,

Any plans for a testing boat (aka LEQ12 boat)?

We will be using AC40s to test some of our components and systems

My guess is they may use the AC40 for some foil testing (not allowed on Patriot) but will stick to the big boat for everything else. Foils are shorter lead-time items.

AM's strategy looks to be pretty good. Alinghi could be on a similar path if they can catch up. Am guessing we will see for example cyclors on Alinghi starting here soon too.

Are they still sailing in February when Slingsby has SailGP and (maybe) a wedding? If so, who has the port pod then?

Do not be so quick to toss Doyle to the trash heap.

In Stingray's link above #1255 it mentions that Richard Bouzaid (Doyle Sails) was in the coaching boat sailing alongside AM. Add to this the fact that when AM recently went to a newly recut Main that they made a tremendous improvement in foiling starts in minimal wind conditions. That is huge news for American Magic which probably had the most problems in light winds in the last AC.

This is what 83 nautical miles of foiling looks like:

Speeds over 43 knots and spent a total of 2 hours and 40 minutes up on their foils!
