If they could, I would send Patriot to Barcelona for practice in that nasty sea state, while they develop the foils and such in Pensacola.

Such is the buzz around the New York Yacht Club American Magic syndicate, thoroughly deserved from outstanding training performances on the water in recent months, that it’s no surprise to see legends of the America’s Cup showing up to see just what’s going down in Pensacola.

And on Tuesday the DeVos family, the backers of the syndicate, hosted two of the most famous names in the sport - Tom Whidden and Gary Jobson – onboard the chase boat. Whidden was an eight-time campaigner with the great Dennis Conner, three-time winner of the Cup (1980, 1987, 1988) as well as being an inductee of the America’s Cup Hall of Fame. Gary Jobson was tactician for Ted Turner in 1977 on the all-conquering Courageous campaign, alongside being one of the most accomplished broadcast commentators on the Cup and an inductee of the America’s Cup Hall of Fame also. They came to see what the buzz was all about but unfortunately, today, the Pensacola wind Gods simply weren’t playing ball.

The team called it a day after an hour and a quarter and came back ashore. Michael Menninger, the legendary Etchells World Champion, is an interviewee that the recon team has been wanting to speak with for some time. As the ace Flight Controller on Patriot, Michael’s insight into maintaining flight is invaluable and talking specifically about his role he offered: “It depends on the sea state and on the variability of the breeze, (flight) depends on a lot of things but as a flight controller you’re trying to be as consistent and smooth as possible just to avoid using as much of the flaps and the elevators as possible.”

Sounds like AM have pushed past 50 knots for more duration than the brief intervals seen in the past. Something of a Milestone.

"Although they recorded less on the Recon boat, Hall said they were seeing 24kts of breeze on the AC75.

“It was the top end of the wind range, we're probably looking at around 24 knots."

“It's kind of funny. We kept looking down and seeing 50 knots [boatspeed] consistently. So it was It was wild to be on that. It was just so fast, we just had our heads down fully grinding."

Although a "faster boat" boat can be beat by a "better VMG" boat, this kind of performance probably does have real value.

Getting straight line data while pushing over 50 knots has to be a plus for the foil design team.

Agreed, because if they can hold those speeds it seems they have pushed up the bounds at which cavitation is an issue.

Whether that will be a winning factor in the expected lighter winds of Barca is another matter of course. But it might be

Having a "fast mode" just in case is not a bad thing.

Say wind is strong, you are sailing downwind and you go a little farther than needed on the next to last leg. Other examples probably exist.

And this is with the old foils from the last cup. They have also had excellent days of take offs and foil to foil maneuvers in 6 knots of wind. They have really improved the performance of Patriot.

I was thinking that there is an advantage to get more time going faster upwind and downwind. Even if just for the experience. These boats are beasts, and the more comfortable the sailors are with them, the better they will be able to sail. Similar to the fact that the AUS team in SailGP seems to be both the most successful and the team that has stayed together the most consistently and focused the most time on that series.

For sure, all that must be one of the advantages of running a full-scale operation. Am so surprised they will be decommissioning Patriot soon.

'Orient Express' (OE for short from now on?) may gain some big advantages if they sail a 'rented' and well-sorted AC75 deep into '23.

Too limited ability to test IMO if that's all you do.

They will all run full scale on V2 which will be very different from current boats. I get a mix of v1 and modded AC40, but I think you need both
