I don't know Will Canty and with no names I recognise in Australian sailing it's hard to take this campaign seriously. Which makes a further mockery of the event to a point so we should laugh this one off. Shame I was excited for a minute.

The ACEA is allowing the team to announce the details on their own time. GGYC would already know the YC or would not have accepted them back on Jan 11.
More wistful speculative bs
Sorry, but on this occasion I believe Stingray is correct. I really don't think that ACEA would say they have an entry if it didn't comply. I suspect that an agreement has been reached with a suitabke club but the club doesn't want it announced until the challenge is on a firmer footing. The fun will start when members of said club find out they have been kept in the dark for months, but I suspect the flag officer elections will be out of the way by then so they won't be able to do anything for a long time ;)

Another one with no yatch club yet?

Further announcements including the name of the challenging Australian yacht club and key appointments will be released shortly.
EDIT: I see it's been discussed already.

Will Canty and Sailcam.tv are just for publicity. After having watched them at the Aus A-class they don't know enough about what's going on to be able to fill in the entry form....let alone put togther a team.

It will be the Yozoo guys thou so we'll wait and see if they can put together a team that knows what it is doing. As Bertrand kept saying after '83 it need to be ateam that works together; you can't expect to just put a group of guys on a boat and win the America's Cup!

Great to see a Australian team back in it, but afraid this one will set a bad example for the future. I hope to be surprised.

They were the guys who asked Glenn Ashby if he followed the AC. Glenn wasn't impressed

Interesting Ingvall quote (my bold)

--

Aussie bid for America's Cup

AUSTRALIA will challenge for a berth in the America's Cup in 2013, ending more than a decade on the sidelines, organisers announced.

But the backers of the project remained shrouded in mystery last night.

Sydney-Hobart winning skipper Ludde Ingvall, who raised the possibility of an Australian challenge before Christmas, said that he was not involved with the registered challenge.

He said he was aware of "two or three" groups who were trying to mount an Australian challenge for the 2013 Cup, which will be raced between hi-tech catamarans off San Francisco.

"I will not be involved, I don't intend to challenge but I wanted to make sure Australia had an entry," Ingvall said.

All challengers will battle for the Louis Vuitton Cup, whose winner will face America's Cup defender Oracle Racing of the United States.

Two French teams, a Swedish outfit and an Italian club are the other Louis Vuitton Cup contenders announced so far.

"The Australian team is progressing with intensive work on all fronts: crew selection is taking place, the technical programme is underway and the formal structure, including legacy provisions, is being cemented," a statement said yesterday.

Australia II, under the famous "Boxing Kangaroo" flag, beat US yacht Liberty in the last race of the nail-biting 1983 series, taking the trophy away from New York for the first time in the event's 132-year history.

The game has changed in the 10 years since veteran yacht owner Syd Fischer led the last Australian campaign, the unsuccessful Young Australia, which competed in Auckland.

The current Cup holder, Golden Gate Yacht Club of San Francisco, has decreed that the 34th Cup will be sailed in 72-foot catamarans with wingsails rather than winged keels.

The new rules are designed to limit costs.

With a camera on a pole leaning over from the chase boat.

Or while you are floating in the water if you don't mind losing a leg to the rudder.

(I've had a catamaran sail over me while in the water taking pictures of it, it's a bit alarming.)

On other fronts, this secret but public but still secret challenger stuff just seems to confuse everyone involved. Can't they just call a press conference, with live people? It would make things a lot easier to understand.

After OR and ML in Rome, the Artemis one set the standard, really good stuff. Live and everything.

Worth was in Paris for the Energy Team announcement but for whatever reason that one was not shown live. Can't recall much of the Aleph team's announcement, Pace and Gautier (at least) did do a presser in Paris.

Reminder of the teams lineup so far, in order of entry:

1 OR

2 ML

3 Artemis

4 Unannounced [TNZ]

5 Aleph

6 Team Australia

7 Energy Team

8 Unannounced [today]

I expect we will know the 8th entry very soon.

Fucking wish I'd been there!
Is Will Canty a big, kinda shambly Flintstones guy toting a ton of camera gear? A bit of a lost sheep. If so, this all begins to fit. I was standing around with my hands in my pockets somewhere or other and he started asking for an OK to do stuff and I had to stop him, telll him I was just a looker, and point him in the right direction.

Sounds like a group of 6 Australian's want to go for a joy ride on an AC45.

Divided by 6 weathly individuals, $25,000 really isn't that much for a day of thrills and spills you can't get anywhere else................................

Anyone want to split it 6 ways and joy me for a joy ride?
