Japan launches Red Bull Foiling Generation

Eight two-member sailing teams descended on the port city of Wakayama to compete April 17-19 in identical Flying Phantom vessels, marking the launch of Red Bull Foiling Generation. The finale saw 17-year-olds Shinichiro Yano and Issei Fujiki take advantage of perfect 12-knot wind conditions to get ahead of rivals Eri Fukazawa and Crew Takayama in a dramatic knock-out finish. Yano and Fujiki’s prize for victory is a place at the 2016 World Final where they will be joined by six more national winners. - See more at: http://www.sailingscuttlebutt.com/2015/04/19/japan-launches-red-bull-foiling-generation/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=facebook#sthash.LjbilXNC.dpuf

from the same link, and at least the second time this has been suggested

--

Coutts said that he still hoped to have six challengers in Bermuda and that even if Team New Zealand were to withdraw which he deemed unlikely another team from New Zealand would likely fill the breach.

Ideally, no question youd keep Luna Rossa in the game, Coutts said. But I think we will definitely see other teams coming in because of the boat change, and I can tell you theres a Japanese team coming in, and when you see who the owner of that team is, you would debate whether its bigger or smaller than Luna Rossa.

It reminds of what Iain Percy said in that recent article from Aus where he suggested that money was not any problem for the potential Asian team(s), the problem with bigger boats was more the 'how do we start?' engineering mountain to climb.

OK, then what is the speculation on who would be bigger than Luna Rossa / Prada?

Who has a record of being interested in sailing?

Toyota? Sony? Kenwood?

There's a guy from Japan who's been campaigning in NYYC circles, I forget his name, may have been in 12M's.

So...I guess by saying this he means to imply we are talking a businessman on the scale of Masayoshi Son or Tadashi Yanai, and not the establishment Japanese yachtsmen such as Makoto Uematsu that were behind Japan's 12M challenges? Maybe the latter would be out because he has old fashioned ideas about wanting to sail his own boat.

Why don't you ping ehman, he'll have the skinny on him for you...
TE is staying clear of AC35, clearly. But if the Japanese guy does have NYYC and 12M history then yes, good chance TE would be aware.
The team will apparently be announced next month, soon enough for me to just kick back and watch.

If Dalton folds I expect to see an Oracle NZ team - maybe lead by Coutts mate Butterworth. Coutts doesn't need to worry about entry rules for teams he wants in, his poodles will agree to whatever he (Larry) wants.

When is(was) the deadline for entry?
No deadline for entry,no deadline for first installement, just for the second one as per Prot with amendment 4 but not seen amendment 5, if existing (since last week competitors meeting):

Second installment of the Entry Fee: by no later than December 1,

2014, written confirmation of payment of the second installment of the

Entry Fee in the sum of US$100,000

When is(was) the deadline for entry?
Fucking months ago along with a performance bond/entry fee, but it's not a problem if you need a French poodle to out vote a viable competitor...
ah, but bigger than LR. and its a Japanese poodle...

It's not LR's Euros that make it a worthy competitor, it's their history and commitment to the AC.

So no matter how many Yen Mr Team Nippon has, it's no more a valid comparison that the last one he tried.....

'The foiling 45's are almost as fast - as a boat we had no intention of using'

Sir Straw-man Coutts.

If he's smart and interested then perhaps he will entice whatever talent he can find. Ex-LR personnel are an obvious talent pool but with all teams now needing half or less people, a lot of expertise could suddenly be available.

Talk about a smoke screen. It doesn't matter whether they are bigger or smaller than LR. All that matters is that if they get a Japanese team instead of LR, this is what is happening

1. Swapping a very experienced AC team for one with zero experience

2. Swapping a team with very significant experience of foiling cats for one that has never done it.

3. Swapping a team with lots of experience of wing sails for one that has never used one.

5. Swapping a team that has done 18 months of research into foils and aerodynamics for one that has no experience at it.

So, to sum up, we swap a seriously experienced team that was a potential winner for one with no experience who would need a miracle to win. Even if they were able to recruit lots of LR's personnel, creating a team is a lot more than that and even with the wing and platform designs being provided, they are starting a long way behind the other teams.

RC is so full of shit I find it hard to accept that even he believes what he says. It's back to the days when he was trying to tell us you could compete in AC34 for under $10m
