Thanks for posting that. Interesting article and history, impressive machine and pilot. I wonder how much extra altitude he gained by not having the weight of the starter and battery and attitude gyro. I would have had to keep the gyro.
Now I'm wondering why the FAI cared if he landed in the same spot he took off from or not, seems pretty irrelevant to a max altitude record.

Yeah I was pretty blown away by that news yesterday. It's only the 2nd fire season that that size aircraft has been here in WA, with this season being based at Busselton. The loss of the aircraft will punch a sizeable hole in the firefighting capabilities in the southern half of WA this fire season.Meanwhile, in the sleepy southern regions of remote WA, a 737.....

Sounds like the WA govt has already arranged something with NSW Fire Service re using one of their leased planes if needed, although if there's a fire/s raging on the east coast then that aircraft will not be available. And that is a problem because we had a LOT of late spring rain and so extra growth and now everything is browning off so without that airborne firefighting capability in difficult terrain will mean those fires are likely to get bigger before they're contained.

OK I'll bite Ed.
Re why use that aircraft there in what appears to be just scrub? I tell you why. The Fitzgerald River National Park is a highly valuable biosphere containing many unique flora not found anywhere else in Oz, let alone the rest of the world.
We had a very wet late spring so lots of late season plant growth and now we're 2 months into a warm dry summer so it's browned off and now dry. It's also windy. If that fire got away it would devastate the unique environment that exists in this part of the world.

Well this was a totally fucked up "Hold my beer and watch this" moment.
It's painful to hear the transcript of the conversation between the pilot and the tower. It's hard to decide who was more stupid. Go straight to 7:59 in the video if you don't want to hear the background stuff.
