MAGA asshole Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) gave the game away this morning. He thinks it's ridiculous that they can't simply declare the budget to be cut, and is apparently angry that it is taking so long. He declared that avoiding default was 100% the responsibility of President Biden.

Hello 14th Amendment, my new favorite.

Reveal two things- the Republican plan is not just to break things and blame Democrats, they have held this attitude for so long that the new generation of Repub critters genuinely think that's how it is supposed to work. Also, they think the President can do anything he wants... a bit heartening to think that they hold the same for Democratic Presidents, but still... ...

The House passed it. Kind of wonder how much this increased spending with the higher yields and all the other knock on effects. Does the GOP really want to increase the debt or are they just that fucking stupid? What did Mccarthy get from this theater?

Poll: Americans favor Biden-McCarthy debt compromise, oppose far-right push for deeper cuts

Just 17% of Americans agree with right-wing Republicans who insist Congress should let the U.S. default on its loans rather than raise the debt ceiling without deep spending cuts, according to a new Yahoo News/YouGov poll.

Instead, the public favors — by a 2-to-1 margin — the sort of bipartisan deal struck over the weekend by President Biden and GOP House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. That deal, which includes smaller spending freezes and reductions in exchange for a two-year debt-ceiling hike, is now moving through Congress despite objections from the far-right House Freedom Caucus.

Remind me, again. Are we back to trusting polls or sticking with they mean nothing?

It depends.

Very little. He had a weak hand and there are no mandates from the people to reduce spending - we're staying at COVID levels with some minor tweaks and have 'new normalled' the baseline which makes progressives content. Two trillion per year going forward. There's some hand wringing by people trying to make name but the Health Care industrial complex and the Military Industrial complex both got their raises so that covers 90% of congress so donations are secure. There's some stuff in there I really didn't think they'd add - like the regulation changes on energy - but politicians are gonna politic and bitter pills go down better with lots of lubricant. Clever.

They also laid the framework for getting rid of the debt ceiling all together given that they DIDN'T actually raise it. They agreed to ignore it exists. That was an interesting choice. Watch what people do, not what people say. That could just be for plausible deniability - "I didn't vote to raise it"... but if anyone ACTUALLY runs on that language, then you'll know they really are stupid. No one who cares about fiscal issues cares about that distinction and NO one is going to save their seat using that tactic.

Domestically, it was a Status-quo push. If you like the current system, you can keep the current system - its safe for at least another two years.

Globally, it's a mixed bag. More debt = weaker dollar which will help the most indebted countries get dollars to pay for imports. That'll help a little in places like Pakistan. The question for them long term is whether inflation is dollar driven or demographics driven. Again, the problem is that EVERYONE is borrowing hand over fist so its hard to predict in a vacuum.

Holy shit! We agreed to pay the bills for the money we already spent! What a revolutionary idea. The hostages usually die at the end, so this is a welcome plot twist. Thanks, bipartisan senile incompetent dude!

The next thing you know, the folks in the middle will start working on an actual budget to determine our current spending priorities.

I think you are confused about who the progressives are. They're pissed and blaming Biden.

Who knew that making an actual budget was so hard?
