The Laser Class seeks new leadership!!

Their annual meeting was held via Zoom on October 30.  Per this Microsoft Word - TLC AGM Invitation & Chairmans message 2021.docx (thelaserclass.com) they need a new Chairman and Exec Secretary as the incumbents both stepped down.  Among the reasons given is the "challenging relationship with our boat builder." (!!!)  If LP cannot get along with the people trying to salvage their brand/boat/class, they apparently cannot get along with anybody at all.   Wonder what happened at the meeting?

I'm sure they do find the situation very complicated to describe appropriately and that they are finding it very challenging to write up.  I think i would too if I were in their position and needed to phrase an account that presented the situation in a fashion that LP senior management would find acceptable.

As a young man I was working with a UK civil servant. He gave me one bit of advice, 'always offer to write the minutes, even if you don't win in the meeting you can win afterwards. No one will read them at the time, and if they ever need to it will be too late for them '.

Our wonderful little game has prospered when those building the toys and organizing the play have been driven by a desire to put more butts on boats and have worked tirelessly to accomplish that.

The  game has and always will suffer when people focus their energy and squander assetts  on control issues. 
 

The Laser Class deserves to die for the same reason the ILCA should have been disbanded years ago, and action was necessary to extract the game from the clutches of a foolish trademark owner. 
 

The absolute ONLY reason anyone needs to be “in charge” of anything related to sailboat racing is to allow that person the freedom to accomplish the necessary work.

I could write a novel trying to explain the previous paragraph.

Here are the minutes of the recent AGM of The Laser Class.

The 2021 Annual Meeting
The 2nd Annual General Meeting was held via Zoom on 30 October 2021. Chairman Beat Heinz and Executive Secretary Andreas Doring reported that The Laser Class (TLC) faced a challenging year, particularly due to the MNAs’ and ILCA’s efforts to not allow any events to take place and the limitations posed by the Covid 19 pandemic, resulting in all events being cancelled or postponed.  The webinars organized were well received and attended. The finance report showed 10,886.50 euros in open payables. Membership has grown from 986 before the previous AGM to 1107 members to date from 59 countries. The biggest TLC member countries are from the Italy (300), United Kingdom (197), and Netherlands (99).
Laser Builder, LaserPerformance Lda, noted that TLC was able to organize itself, prepare a constitution, put up a website and initiate social media activities in record time.  Membership has increased, strengthening the Class.  The Builder remains a strong supporter of TLC and, as event sponsor, commits itself to support events in 2022.  Manufacturing stopped in August as LaserPerformance moved its Laser manufacturing from the U.K. to LaserPerformance Lda in Setubal, Portugal.  Manufacturing has now resumed and backorders are now being fulfilled. Logistics remains a challenge.  Demand for Lasers remains robust and next year LaserPerformance has forecasted a growth in its manufacturing and distribution of Lasers.  
Technical Officer Charles Campion was unable to attend due to being delayed traveling back to the UK.  He was visiting the Builder, LaserPerformance Lda, in Portugal to inspect and sail the Laser manufactured at the Setubal facility.  Charles has also drafted new Class Rules, following World Sailing format, which will be finalized before the end of 2021.  A vote of thanks to Charles for all his efforts.

Charles Campion will continue as Technical Officer and Bahman Kia will represent the Builder.
Participants thanked Beat and Andreas for the exceptional work and efforts undertaken under challenging circumstances.  Heini Wellmann was also thanked for the leadership he provided during the formation of the Class. 
Next year’s annual meeting will be held in conjunction with one of the Laser events in Europe.

So another new company. Laser Performance Euurope (UK based) fell by the wayside some years ago and Laser Performance LLC (US) became a builder, and now it seems everything is transferred to Portugal.
