Love the fact that the citizens of Alaska made their voices heard in how they hold elections.

Some folks want to allow the legislature to override the will of the people.

The most popular candidate did win. Had it been a race between Peltola and Begich, Begich might have won, but that wasn't the race. So instead, Palin took votes from Begich, where voters would have voted for Begich if Palin had stayed out of the race.

Palin had more first choice votes than Begich, so in a traditional race, she could have won a primary but would have lost in the general, which is what happened. People that would have voted for Begich voted for Peltola when he was no longer in the race, and Peltola won.

Perot is one of the more famous ones - Bush the Greater would have won handily over Clinton if not for Perot sucking up 19% of the votes.

Here’s how to fix the flaw. If Alaska eliminated the candidate with the fewest total votes, rather than the fewest first-place votes, the ranked-choice system would be sure to elect a candidate such as Begich who defeats all rivals in one-on-one matchups.


Call it a “Total Vote Runoff.” A candidate’s total votes in such a system would be determined by the number of other candidates he or she is ranked above. For example, when a candidate is ranked first on a ballot in an election involving three candidates, then this first-choice candidate is ranked above two other candidates and gets two votes from this ballot.

That's not how the system works.

What you call ranked choice is the same as preferential voting in Australia. It's a FAR fairer system than 'first past the post'.

The reason you don't like it is because your candidates are likely to do poorly under such a system. That doesn't mean it's unfair though, just that you can't find candidates that can attract over 50% of the vote and want to settle for a lesser number.

In the general election, Peltola came in first and she came in first by a country mile, 48.8 to your girl’s 25.7 and your boy’s 23.3. What you’re actually saying is that a Republican could have been elected in the Alaska House election at some point in time with this one neat trick:

As someone said there is life outside PA. in my case it was a long road trip coming home from a family holiday. Oh and I have another 10 hours today. So not avoiding simply engaged in something else. Some of you could use some time away.

That conservatives are embracing majoritarian arguments to argue against ranked-choice voting is nevertheless illuminating, because it shows that they believe in majoritarianism only where Republicans can expect a majority. Otherwise, they seem to believe, some sort of electoral system is necessary to properly weigh the votes of conservative constituencies so that they count more than everyone else’s. As the only true Americans, they’re entitled to win every election every time. Anything else is just election rigging.
