I’m in as SA Kenny Dumas so we can easily sort for SA boats. I kicked ass early by banging the left in the last Vendee VR and then watched the foilers blow my doors off with their “full packages”. But it was fun racing against SA Knut and a handful of OD boats would be more funner.
I’ve got 2000 “free” points to buy some basics like hull polish or light air sails. Maybe Mom suggests a 2000 point SA-OD package?

Hi guys. Bottom line is that if you want to be highly competitive, you're going to have to pony up cash for the "full pack"... and they've increased prices. It's fun, and you can have fun for free, but only if you don't expect to be near the front.

An excellent tool is zezo.org. It can give you proposed routings. And... If you want to run the race without spending any money, you can experiment in zezo with turning various options on and off to see which will give you the best ETA, before deciding what to spend you free credits on. Also, note that for years, it has been possible to earn credits by racing, so if you're using an old ID, it probably still has some credits lingering on it from past racing.

I don't know of any discounted race packages. If you want to do the whole TOR, I'd recommend entering the IMOCA event... I believe they're only running VO65 for a sub-set of events. Although if you choose to run both with "full packs" on both, you'll get a discount on your second one.

You'll see my name is now "11th Hour Racing - Your Mom". This was just changed yesterday, as I am part of the official 11th Hour Racing Team for this event. That'll be fun. My first time having a sponsor in this thing. For those who don't know my history... I started in the 2014 VOR and got totally hooked... In 2017-2018, I won multiple races and eventually rose to be #1 in their world rankings. I then got bored with it and started racing more exotic high-risk routings more often for fun, and skipped a lot of races, so I eventually dropped in the rankings. In the meantime, some others have come along who are better anyway.

I'll try to help out here when I can, but I'm going to be pretty busy with some personal stuff and the racing, so I probably won't be checking in here more than maybe once a day. I'll try to answer questions, etc. Good luck, whoever joins... It's fun!

A couple more quick recommendations...
  • Put the VR Offshore app on your phone. Partly because you'll find yourself wanting to check on it throughout the day and won't always want to get to your computer... Partly because you may encounter situations where you want to be able to check something at night without getting out of bed... and partly because if you're playing on credits, not with the full pack, then you can only set two scheduled maneuvers or waypoints at a time... but with the phone app, you can watch ads to schedule additional maneuvers or waypoints. So... for example... sometimes when I'm running close to land during the night and I don't have a full pack, I'll let my phone run through 7 ads so that I can plunk 9 waypoints down. Then I'll go back onto my computer to move my 9 waypoints around more precisely. Then i'll go to bed, knowing I have a good safe course set for the night.
  • If you want to be really serious, go into the link in zezo that says something about the "dashboard". Install the dashboard. It's a Google Chrome extension that provides all sorts of detailed data from the server, as well as mapping details that allow you to sail very close to the beach without grounding.

The first leg will probably be decided in the first two days. The routings are pretty straightforward and stable after Gibraltar, but getting there is chaos. Every time GFS has issued a new forecast, the routing recommendations have significantly changed... So it's unstable so far and the best bet will be to monitor every time the forecast updates and adjust accordingly.

The update schedule is on NOAA GFS's schedule (the game uses GFS winds). I'm not good at UTC and such... I can tell you it starts at 9:30 and 3:30 AM and PM in the US Central Time Zone at the moment (an hour later in the summer). In stable conditions, the update is pretty cleanly posted within a short amount of time, unless you are waiting for the long-term data (a week plus in the future). Like half an hour. But when it's highly unstable like this... it can take an hour or two or sometimes more for the new winds to stabilize. It becomes critical to pay attention and react without overreacting... which is obviously extremely difficult to do well. Which... honestly... in unstable conditions... is just like real life sailing.

Anyway... If you want to do well in Leg 1, plan to spend a lot of the first 30-40 hours trying to adjust each time one of these updates comes in. Note that the first one comes in 20 minutes after the IMOCA race starts.

I spent 500 points to polish my hull since we all know that a clean boat is a fast boat. If we all buy the same upgrades, it makes the smack talk more fun. If you guys have enough points, we could either get the light or heavy wind sails. I’m guessing the light will be more beneficial for this leg even with the wind forecast.
But I’m keeping my weather input in the real thread. I enjoy trying to outguess the real navigators and playing this game really helps me get into it.

If you have the app on your phone, you can get a few more free credits by watching an ad. (It only works pre-race, only once per race). 360 credits, I think...

For this leg, I believe the single best option to buy would be the Code 0. That or Foils. Light sails might appear good when you look at the starting forecast, but afer Gibraltar, you might never use them again.

The forecast for the first two days is quite volatile. At the moment, it actually has a lot of reaching even during the first two days (C0 rather than light sails). If it changes to have more upwind/downwind, then light sails could become more beneficial during those first two days.

A word about "stamina" and pro winches... For people who haven't played in a while... They've added a "stamina" function. You'll see a meter on your boat that shows your current stamina, from 0 to 100. Maneuvers take a LOT longer when your stamina is low. It recovers with time... slower in heavy wind, faster in light wind. It drops when you tack, gybe, or change sails. Pro Winches reduce your penalty time during those maneuvers, AND also reduce your stamina loss. Am I advocating buying pro winches over sails you'll actually use or foils? No. But... If you don't buy winches, be aware that every tack, gybe, or sailchange will be extremely costly, with long-term ramifications (due to the stamina loss). You'll find yourself saying "I'm fat, drunk, and old, but I could do this myself and recover faster". It is what it is. My real point is... Take care to avoid unnecessary tacks, gybes, and particularly sailchanges. And don't make any of those maneuvers in a panic. Pause, think, and then act. Particularly if you don't have pro winches.

PS... Viper's SA ID says noob, but his VR resume says expert. He's very good at this. If he offers advice, pay attention. :geek:

Thanks Mom
The C0 is certainly the right sail for the start so I’m going with it. The official cheap ass OD is C0 with a Polish

aka: That'll teach me to sleep, relying on old forecast!

Enjoy you're 90+min headstart ;)

Thanks Mom ….. note to self read his stuff before you start… fun first day back on a e race course till bed time! I’m sleeping lost 10,000 boats. North shore it is for Me Rongo Rekohu SA.
Where is that 28 knot hi speed gear for these imoca want-a-bees hiding?

After all that North shore talking, I decided to go left to get in phase with the 5 degree lefty. Seems good.

Good morning, I've shaken the dust sheet off the old Mongrel and launched off the poop deck of the frigate. No point in splashing out for too many bells or whistles on this leg, so all I have is a lowly C0.

I see what Mom was talking about with the stamina thing. This could become extremely annoying on some of the confined passages, but hopefully won't have too much effect on this race.

Let me know if there is any interest in a daily sched, if I can remember how to do that shit........
