Hello,

On to Leg 2. A quick piece of info is that I am only dealing with IMOCAs, if someone else wants to play with the 65s, please feel free.

Leg 2 has seen a few old faces dragging their arses off the sofa and out to play - welcome.

The initial rankings mean very little, apart from where everyone is setting up to try and cross the equator. I have shelled out for the Full Pack, which means I have high hopes, but low expectations! I'm aiming for a point in the western S Atlantic, I've seen too many horror stories of the coast of Africa, light head winds are not fun.

Any way, here are the current rankings, bring it on!

I’m Hoople in the race… at least for this race or until the end of TOR. I don’t know my login credentials, and VR support… is uh unsupportive with this matter.

Same thing happened to me at the start of the last Volvo Ocean Race a couple years ago. They eventually sent me the reset password email a week later, be patient. VR is notorious for their customer support.

Now the app will not load the game on a iOS tablet.! Just the spinning arrow.? You can blame me as yesterday I was thinking no problems, it’s almost to good to be true.

Same old same old / restarted the iPad and it now loaded…

Some important things about this...
-Autosails actually will do a good job of choosing the correct sail. It works better than it might appear to. The only time to turn it off is if you want to avoid a sailchange (and associated penalties) by intentionally sailing with the wrong sail for a period of time (or because you'll be leaving it unattended and are sailing close to a sailchange threshold).
-There's a threshold for autosails to change your sail. 1.4%. So it won't change your sail until the new sail is better than your current sail by 1.4%. AND... There's something advanced players call the "boost effect". When you're sailing with the "wrong sail", inside that 1.4% threshold, so autosails hasn't executed the change yet... you get the "right sail's" speed. It isn't shown on your screen, but that's the speed you're going. So... There's no need (or even value} in forcing autosails off to change the sail in this situation. (Also, this is all just among the sails you have in inventory... if the "right sail" is one you don't own, it won't boost to that sail's speed). Anyway... when autosails are turned off, you don't get the boost effect.
-Finally... The user interface (UI) doesn't totally accurately show the wind you're actually in. When conditions are stable, it's very close. Usually close enough to not notice a difference. When things are volatile (ie, a new wind forecast comes in, and it's totally different from the prior one, which happens in light and shifty situations like the doldrums), the differences can be large for a while. Autosails will make decisions based on the wind on the server, not the wind shown in the UI, and that's the correct arrangement because the server's wind is what actually matters. (If you have the "dashboard" Chrome extension described in Zezo, it can show you the server wind).
-So... you can get situations where your sail looks wrong in the UI, but Autosails are on and it isn't changing... and you should leave it alone... Because either you're inside the threshold and getting the boost, or your wind on the server isn't what you're seeing in the UI.

In short, it's usually best to trust autosails. I recall in the past never trusting autosails and wanting to control it manually... So I realize for those of you who have been away for a while, that might be hard to believe... But you'll usually do better with them on.

Usually best to only turn them when executing advanced techniques like trying to avoid a sailchange and eating the "wrong sail" speed to do so, or sometimes when trying to manually force a sailchange earlier than autosails would do it (to get it done in lighter wind, or to start recovering stamina sooner).

The games within the game. If you can pay attention to these points mentioned and use the dashboard to your advantage, you can improve exponentially.

This has been a thing for a couple of years actually. I’ve reached out to support four or five times with some variation of “get fucked” each time, or in one case no response at all. This is despite me loyally supporting the platform with full pack purchases, that amount to by far the most $$$ i’ve spent on any app hands down.

The issue is that when I started out, I registered with a throwaway email address that would have only had access to for a week or so. Since then, I’ve been able to get new phones and have the app work with my account without any login, as it seems to log me in automatically. If I try to change the email address it wants my password, which I haven’t the faintest idea of what it is. I will have to bite the bullet I’m afraid. It’s interesting that they sent you a reset password, however you likely had access to whatever email account you signed up with.

Good morning,

The race is splitting between those of boundless optimism (the Africa gang) and those cynical unbelievers who have got their arses bitten in the past. The optimist are taking the shorter route, the cynics are taking the long way round.

Here are the completely meaningless rankings. The next ones will be on Monday morning, they probably won't be any more relevant.

I will say this is the first time I’ve ever gone east on this type of leg… It’s a gamble given the peculiarities of the forecast model that I wanted to try.

In reply to Breitling's question, the west will be correct..... I hope!

One extreme outlier to the map above is Hoople who is currently tracing some intricate images along the coast of Africa, whilst desperately hoping that none of Driftwood's offers of extended vacation time will come to pass.

I may have got myself too far west, but time will tell.

Here's to Equator crossings!

Good morning,

MikeMike has been added as requested, any idea of his SA name?

Back in the game the Doldrums seem quite far south, probably a result of the time of year. They seem to be wider in the east, but obviously there is the improved angle once through.

Viper seems to be best positioned in the east, Breitling and JeSa have the central section, Shockwave is best in the centre-west and then there is an uncouth rabble climbing all over each other in the far west.

Don't forget we are in the southern hemisphere now and there are some sneaky islands off Brazil.

The South Atlantic is looking fairly disorganised, no big lows trundling eastwards until you get a long way south. It may be a case of picking your way through the heffalump traps.

Irrelevant positions.
