The Ocean Race 2023 leg 2: Cabo Verde to Capetown

It sure looks like 11th Hour and Malizia have found their preferred conditions. I believe the IMOCA experience on Biotherm and Holcim/PRB and their most recent launched VPLP boats should prevail around the track. But, if 11th Hour and Malizia get these conditions for the majority of the Fasrt 50's and Roaring 40's. They could build an impressive lead.

Biotherm and Holcim aren't VPLP's boat but Verdier's boats.

By the way, both hulls has been built outside france, Biothern built by Persico Marine and Holcim built by Carrington.

Besides, 11th Malama is also a Verdier, completely built in france at CDK then MerConcept.
And Malizia is a VPLP's boat, completely built in france at Multiplast.
Quite confusing : french team's boats has been built abroad (a first for french offshore sailing teams, the reasons were mainly because there were late project), foreign team's boats has been built in france.

Yes they should be gybing for Tristan Da Cunha shortly. Some of you may remember Ken read and the boys on Puma V70 ended up there for a few days. If you haven't read about Tristan do so here: https://www.tristandc.com/index.php

Population of around 264 people

IIRC they hit the links while they were there.

TM doing 13 knots seemingly dead down wind for the past while. Hopefully nothing has broken.

Edit: must have been mid gybe as the top three are all pointing west within sight of each other.

the one hour updated tracker is great for the followers, but bad for the race, I reckon. It allows the boats to control each other every hour, and mimic the others strategy, thus ending all together as seen so far.

Don't they see each other on AIS anyway?
I appreciate the one hour update.

the AIS range is not more than 8 nautical miles. Everything beyond that, doesn't appear.

I also like the hourly update, but it is a pity that the crews can see it, too.
Thanks. So this is what Charlie was talking about in one of the videos when he was looking for the other boats and said something like "I don't see Biotherme but we know where they are and the next update is coming in soon". I knew that AIS has a limited range but didn't know it was only 8 miles. Since the top 5 are so close I thought they might see each other.

Anyway, I love this leg and it is far from over yet! When they started the race with effectively 5 Imocas doing the circumvention I didn't think this would be interesting. But it is indeed!

Will standing on the foil cutting a fishing rope. scary stuff

Scary stuff indeed. Glad the ropes did not take off the foil.

And I noticed this. Boat speed 28 kts with 26 kts TWS and AWA 65 degrees. I will have to power-up the upwind polars considerably for TM it seems. Add +/- 12 kts for this range. An incredible performance if they can sustain this over longer periods. If someone had told me I would not have believed these numbers.

I love following your updates! Be careful with the polars, the TWA would be something similar to 120 - 140 with the AWA moving forward as they are going so fast. If the TWA was 65 that would probably still be in the high teens / low 20's
Edit: I assume the bottom left is the target TWA actually (Pilot Target WA, it's stating 145!

Weather routing Feb 7th

Input

  • Luckgrib GFS 0.25 degrees and WW3
  • Boat positions 10:40 UTC
Output
Pic 1 has the big pic with Brazilian navy synoptic chart and GFS both 00 UTC. Blue stuff is projected rain in order to help indicate the location of fronts. As can be seen, the Brazilian navy seems to use GFS as basis for their synoptic charts. Boats at extrapolated positions for 00 UTC. As can be expected in the Southern Atlantic, the situation is very complex and dynamic. The fleet is triangulated in between 3 LPs.

Moving the GFS 0.25 degrees forward, the LP west of Guyot and the LP SE of the fleet are projected to dissolve at the time that I type this, lunchtime. Leaving the fleet in the evening with lesser winds around 20 kts.

Pic 2 has the Wx routing for the 10:40 UTC boat positions. This routing is driving the fleet below 45 degrees south. I noted that the Antarctic Ice Exclusion Zone suddenly appeared in the tracker. But is not officially published yet at the TOR notice bord. As stated in the leg 2 Sailing Instructions article 4. The fleet is now projected to cross that AEZ boundary @ 45 S.

Pic 3 has the Wx table for this routing. ETAs coming forward, again. So note that the routing is inaccurate due to the missing AEZ.

Pic 4 but before they are at the AEZ, 11th hr as most southern boat, is projected to catching a LP ride Feb 8th 08 UTC.

Pic 5 GFS projection Feb 9th 00 UTC when boats gybe if there was no AEZ. They will gybe earlier in time.

I’m currently reading Will Oxleys book on Expedition a “gentle” introduction. A good tip from Nick @Expedition. And just figured out how to set an exclusion zone in Expedition, using race notes. But I have to tweak a bit further as it is not recognized as such, tomorrow.
