Ah, used Quickscat in the past, they gave sea surface winds. That satellite is gone. though for some reason Ascat was not surface winds, but presentation of wind at a higher level. But after reading Herman linked material, yep it is surface winds.
Nice.

Was looking at Ascat when they went through doldrums, and some got a very light wind, a bit stronger wind, then light wind passage. The others only light wind.
Edit, looked back on tracker, looks like it was Guyot that was positioned in the best spot.

Weather routing Jan 31st
Pic 1 has Sat IR overlay 08:20 UTC pass and 08:40 UTC boats positions with max sat zoom. The fleet could be on their way to the exit of the woods. But still some active clouds to their south, but these are yellow and not blue or red colored. These clouds are +/- 70 nm south of Guyot. The boats have been picking up speed in the past hours. Double digit boat speeds noted again for all boats @ 09:00 UTC. Guyot as most eastern positioned boat has done the most nm in 24-hrs (209 nm) and has been expanding her lead. Pic 2 with Brazilian navy synoptic chart also suggests that the worse part of the ITCZ could be over.

When the boats are fully out of the woods tomorrow, I will run a new weather routing.

Looking at the tracker it seems that the eastern boats are all going West. Pushing the tracker 4 hours forward it looks like the western ones will get new breeze wile the eastern ones are going to run out of fuel. Still exiting imo everything still can happen.

Usually, the easiest path through the Doldrums is West. But, so far Guymont has done very well cutting the corner. The boats in the West will have hotter angles. But, they will also have more distance to sail. Shaving corners is a really good thing. The downside is Team Europe could still find a blind alley. Only time will tell. But, bravo for taking the risk!

Thanks for that, possibly they are not completely out of the doldrums, and into the proper steady trades yet. Just my guess...

Team Guyot Environment now out to a 50nm lead. Holcim 2nd. Will be interesting to see how Guyot perform now all the boats are in steady breeze? Can they hold off Holcim with such a long way to go.?
