The Ocean Race 2023 leg 3: Capetown to Itajaí, Brazil

After listening to Kevin on one of their videos, I;m glad that he has his ego clipped. Thought it was bad form when in second place to say he was not 'pushing it', then correcting himself partially. He was pushing as hard as the boat would let him.

But the inference was there just the same. He was butt hurt and taking it badly.
wonder if he's considered putting a bigger nose on his boat?

Well earned. congrats to Team Malizia.

Love this tweet just a few hours before the arrival:

But Boris was on Twitter!

Maybe I just an old prick but ... that's pretty fucked up. Sail the fucking boat and leave the media to the OBR.

It will be interesting to see what happens with Rosie. I hope she will somehow, even if by Zoom, be able to be checked out by a medical doctor who specializes in concussions. If she is advised not to continue in the race, which might be advisable given the banging around she would be regularly subjected to, TM would need to pivot and substitute another female sailor. Presumably they have someone on standby; getting a Brazilian visa is not in my experience a quick matter, but maybe they have this at hand or expedited.

You can put money on it that a replacement has been organised, just in case.

My bet is that she will be rested till Newport. That will give them time to assess her condition. Problem is that Boris is being swapped out for that leg too.

It‘s his media team that does all the twitter-instagramm-facebook-youtube work based on the work of antoine. You also see it somewhere around 21 minutes in here (edit: when they communicate Rosie’s accident):

Right; I forgot about that (Boris being out on the leg).
Toggling back and forth between TOR/ORA/and F1 Grand Prix in Melbourne (which I recorded).

Good to see Malizia cross the line first. They earned that win and it helps to keep the scoreboard at least a bit more interesting for the rest of the race.
Still a lot of following to do on this leg though. I'll be interested to see if there is anything up with Holcim-PRB - were those last angles we've seen down to them just not pushing, or something else?
And 11th Hour and Biotherm look like they have a frustrating time ahead of them before they see the line.

Zoom?

There are real qualified experienced actual doctors in Brazil, yes? Multiple clinics with MRI in Itajai. Its not some backwater country, really... I am sure they have already booked one ahead of time.

But still the proper thing to do would be to sideline her for one leg, just in case.

For the comms team of TM this leg has to be pure gold: first out of Cape Town, loosing 1st sail, cracking the mast, seriously considering to return to CT, patching up the mast in the middle of the southern ocean, loosing 700nm to the leader, 2nd at the scoring gate, catching the leader, approaching The Horn in heavy weather, injuring a crew member, 1st at The Horn, blowing up 2 more sails and then beating the boat that was supposed to be fast up the south Atlantic. For a sports hero story it doesn't get much better than this. Plus a crew dynamic that wins hearts among race followers and a gifted OBR with an eye for cinematic shots like that:

During the leg there was concern that due to unusual light winds in the southern ocean the crews would need to ration food at some point. I think Kevin mentioned to have food for 35 days, TM was "35 to 40" days.
TM finished in 34 days and some hours, so they were quick.

Weather update April 2nd
With HPRB finishing in 4 - 5 hours time that leaves 11th Hour Racing Team and Biotherm to finish in the coming days. I will shorten my daily wx analysis to the absolute minimum in order to free up time for a new work project, and to have a first look at fund-raising sail race event around Ireland.
