I'm also on team "he said keel" but that second part is less accurate with the IMOCA pilots and their "overlays", they have heel, speed, and other adjustments on top of plain "come up and come down" of traditional wind angle modes.

here's why these hulls should have more rocker and bow volume like the TM boat. maybe a hair slower around the planet, but a hell of a lot better behaved and more driveable when it really matters.

TM also seem the be the boat least concerned with sailing suuuper flat and the boat handles very well even at some heel in those drone videos. 11th hour looks like it needs to be dead flat and Holcim maybe a little less but still flat, whereas TM can roll and bounce around no problem. Definitely the better southern ocean boat.

Agreed, keel is the one that makes most sense, 1 degree higher or lower wouldn't matter that much anyways and necessitate a "let's do that and see" adjustement. 1 degree keel is a much bigger deal.
Also i watched the video before coming here and realizing there was a debate over this, but to me it seems obvious he meant the keel.

not pretty (from this morning)
They're still going 8.9 knots right now so it's not looking great. Speed over 4 hours is 13.7 kts and over 24 hours is barely 12.8 kts.
Apparently only 1 batten was smashed but it pierced through the main so they had to patch that up as well. The batten had a replacement so that shouldn't be too big a deal.
There were photos of Jack Bouttel inspecting a nearly-finished-looking patch so I maybe they're letting it cure (not too familiar with what products they're using but I assume some kind of resin which must be a pain to cure with the cold).
Anyways hopfully they can get back underway sooner rather than later.
They being said if you're gonna go low and slow with reduced sails, going South like they did was probably the best bet, so they've at least got that much.

Well, Boris said they could be going 5 knots faster than they are, but they don't want to and are content just sitting on Holcim's face right now. Kind of like match racing, you know, stay between the opponent and the mark...
I'm not sure I'm buying it though. Sure, they could probably go faster and I get not wanting to stress the machine, but if it gets to 10-15 knots on the way up to Brazil, which it looks like could be the case, Holcim can probably pass them through boatspeed alone, so I'm not sure what TM is playing at really...

I was thinking that I'd really hate sailing in gusts and heavy seas around Cape Horn with no battens and the center of pressure in the sail sliding all around. But, then I remembered that people did it for like 400 years, so they'll probably get through it.
2 times in this video Biotherm burries the bow completely followed by 90° bear away.
And Holcim-PRB isn't doing much better:

I think it's Holcim to cover. As long as they are in the same weather system with TM when they turn north they think they're good.

Not sure why Holcim should cover Malizia. Once the Boats turn north it will quickly become Holcim vs Biotherm I think. Remember: Malizia lost their Code 0 after 3 Days of Racing at the beginning of the Leg. That Sail is incredibly important & vital in lighter airs.
I am still hoping Malizia wins this Leg but I admit it doesn't look too encouraging. That 20 Mile lead they currently have will be eaten up in no time.
Brunel had a 70-80 Mile lead over Dongfeng during Leg 7 of the 2017/18 VOR around Cape Horn and the Dutch Boat ended up winning the Leg by a mere 16 Minutes.

You explained why. Holcim's only sailing mistakes right now would be to break something or to let Malizia get into a different weather system, not that I see one. So they won't do either. They put on a loose cover, they go where TM goes, and they don't mind giving up handfuls of miles while they're at it. And this isn't just a race, it's a regatta, and Holcim is up 6. They just need to not lose

I think they are going to. 11th Hour doesn't have a Full Main when the Boats turn North. 11th Hour are probably going to come in 4th.
