It's one of so MANY design choices that make the boat so much more sailor-friendly.
You can sit on a foldable seat with your head in one of the bubble canopys an steer from there. Therefore the V-Shape. So you can steer manually while having a good view to where you're going.
They used the outside tiller for the in-port race in Alicante. I think you can see Nico steering in the video from the race.

I don't understand the flat uncushioned seats. I would think they'd be pretty uncomfortable for long periods and could do a better job of holding the helmsman in place in seas. That's a lot of energy just to stay in position.

This is where the 3D capability would help most, though? Would get accurate reading whatever the heel angle?
I'll add the caveat here of this is my armchair opinion... but assuming that the 3D capability works in such a scenario already (it might get confused by its motion through the air) it then adds an extra complexity to the calibration having to cancel out the 3D motion through the air, to the 3D reading; don't get me wrong this is also a problem for mechanical ones, but I guess manufacturers have more experience with modelling that and navigators more experience with calibrating it out

I don't see this as a problem.

These boats have 10-100Hz IMUs already.

Well there must be a reason they're not using them, I'm just hypthoesising based on my limited knowledge (see armchair opinion disclaimer earlier) but its another variable to work with, even if you know the boats exact motion you don't know what thats doing to the airflow, and upwash etc already affects calibration of the existing wands, so it seems to me that developing new sensors would take time :)

In the next couple of hours, if things progress as they have been, they'll be able to throw the food at Holcim! Looking forward to the drone videos... Not sure Kevin will give up his tinned fish, mackerel, anchovies & sardines...

So Holcim-PRB have regained the lead, as expected. What next, though?
The models all seem very different for what lies ahead overnight.
It will be interesting to see if TM tries something radical, again.

You can reach that tiller from almost the entire cabin, especially up near the pedestal and lines and to the sides by the seats for the AP controls with the good canopies, instead of a stick back aft with a tennis ball on it. Boris really thought through how he wanted her laid out, especially for single-handed sailing. I think all of that must really make a difference in human performance under really trying conditions.
I know I'd want a big 'ol robust carbon tiller centrally located like it is on Herman's boat to facilitate hand steering. the way they did it on that boat is excellent and elegant design.

you'd be well braced with your feet anchoring your position on that winch pedestal and your whole body up against the inside of the house. maybe glue down some foam sheet where your back is to add some more stability.

Is Holcim going to win every leg? It’s a bit unfair to Malizia this leg. It should end after the southern ocean part to reward the boat and crew that won the most difficult bit…

On the weather stations, airports and like, they've chanced to ultrasonics mostly, same I have noticed in tunnel ventilation monitoring etc.

I would think modern ultrasonics to be more accurate especially with very low flow speeds and react faster, and they can sense the 3D direction of the flow, but the accurate models need a longer baseline and are thus quite large. Maybe that is the reason.

I've been using an ultrasonic for a couple of years now. trouble free and seemingly very accurate especially at low velocities.
