Leg 6 from Aarhus Denmark to The Hague (Scheveningen port) via Kiel (GER)

Leg Start: 8 June 2023

A three day 800-nautical mile tour with a fly-by at Kiel. One of the shortest legs this edition. The VO65 fleet is rejoining the race for the last two legs.

ETA Scheveningen according to Dutch sailing magazine Zeilen Sunday June 11th in the afternoon; 14:00 CEST or 12:00 UTC (CEST = UTC +/+ 2 hrs) for the VO65s and 18:00 CEST or 16Z for the IMOCAs.

PRO-AM and inport races June 13th for the VO65s and June 14th for the IMOCAs.

More info in Dutch on the activities and race village in Scheveningen here => https://www.zeilen.nl/wedstrijden/the-ocean-race/the-ocean-race-komt-naar-den-haag-2/

According to TOR;
"Much of the early part of the leg takes place in coastal waters, where making the most of the thermal breezes caused by land heating and cooling – as well as dealing effectively with coastal currents – could be key to success.

Depending on the weather conditions, the race organiser has the option to choose between two potential routes on the opening section south to Kiel.Sailing.City. Most direct is under the 11-mile/18-kilometre span of the Great Belt Bridge (Storebæltsforbindelsen in Danish) which connects the Danish islands of Zealand and Funen. Meanwhile, an alternative choice could be to pass beneath the Øresund Bridge that connects Denmark to Sweden.

After rounding a turning mark at Kiel, the fleet heads north again to pass Aarhus on the way back out into the North Sea at the Skagen headland – Denmark’s most northerly point. Given the vagaries of the summer weather in this part of the world, the sailors might have to deal with anything from howling gales to fickle zephyrs on their southerly route down the North Sea."

In the last Volvo Ocan Race in 2017-18 The Hague was the final finish destination for the VO65s. Crews have to make an important routing decision here. The Gotenburg-The Hague leg was won by Dong Feng Race Team by going inshore between the various TSSs and the Dutch coast. And not around the various TSSs that litter the German and Dutch coast in order to manage the busiest traffic in the world.

My routing was accurate for once => https://forums.sailinganarchy.com/threads/vor-leg-11-gothenburg-to-the-hague.199059/post-6257753

Start of the seventh and final leg 7 to Genova (Italy) of the race is Thursday June 15th in the afternoon. 13:00 CEST for the VO65s and 18:00 CEST for the IMOCAs.

The fly-by is strictly a fly by, yes (it is not treated as a scoring gate, correct)?
No scoring in Kiel. There is a different twist, Race Contol can add waypoints to slow down the boats. Looks to me like TOR worked on a media opportunity in Kiel.
Also no VO65 on the Kiel detour, IMOCA only.

But now it is clear: GUYOT environnement - Team Europe will continue the adventure of this around the world race. The boat is in the Kiel shipyard Knierim, the tech team and ten international boatbuilding experts are working day and night on hull, mast, foils and rudder.

In the wild.
Good News. Guyot will apparently be back at the start in Aarhuis. They have got a spare mast from 11th and the boat is currently being repared in Kiel.

That's a great gesture from 11th Hour!

Unlikely now, but I suppose they lend it for free and will want it back in case they still need it.
Also wouldn't be surprised if the helped Guyot financially or with their shore team.
Good sportsmanship, and it will make their possible win look a bit better with all 5 boats finishing.
And as principle sponsors of the race, and likely participants again, they will want the race to look good anyway.

Very surprised that Guyot managed to find the money to stay in the game. Great from 11th to sell them their spare mast. Interestingly the press release thanks all teams but Malizia for their support. I guess not the best vibes between the two German camps. (Guyot has had zero media coverage in Germany. Small team, very small media budget)

I'm slightly confused by the latest FB post from Holcim announcing the crew for Leg 6. Does this mean Kevin will not be on the boat (Benjamin Schwartz as skipper?) Or will Martin le Pape be the OBR? If its the former, I am very surprised!

Text of post..:

"The Leg 6 of The Ocean Race will be the shortest of this edition, with only 800 miles from Aarhus to The Hague. This three-day sprint promises to be highly tactical for the crew of Holcim-PRB and the three other IMOCA boats that will set sail next Thursday, June 8.
Abby Ehler, who has taken part in 3 legs since the start in Alicante, will bring her knowledge of both The Ocean Race and the IMOCA Holcim-PRB. Three sailors from the demanding Figaro Bénéteau circuit will share their expertise in coastal racing, tactics and close encounters with rivals. Yoann Richomme, skipper of the IMOCA Paprec Arkéa, two-time winner of the demanding Solitaire du Figaro and reigning winner of the Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe in Class40, joins the team for this Leg 6. Benjamin Schwartz, who took part in the Leg 4 will take on the role of skipper of Holcim-PRB on this Leg 6. Finally, the talented Martin LE PAPE will be on board for his very first leg of The Ocean Race. A fabulous opportunity for the sailor from Concarneau, who is aiming to take part in the Vendée Globe.

Yes, Kevin Escoffier will not sail Leg 6.

That being said Yoann Richomme is amazing. He won TOR Europe in 2021 with Mirpuri.

Leg 6 isn't really an Ocean Leg, it's more like a coastal Race. You sail down 150 Miles to Kiel, Germany. Then it's back up 300 Miles to the northern tip of Denmark and then some 350 Miles south to The Hague.

I'm fully aware of what this leg entails and who Yoann is.. I'm just very surprised that KevIn isn't on it (IF he isnt- where have you seen this confirmed?)
