Back when it was new the conventional wisdom was the the Web was going to eliminate ignorance by making the totality of human knowledge available to everyone with the click of a mouse.

So much for good intentions - instead it has succeeded in linking up the most ignorant segment of society and empowering them to think they have valid opinions because there are so many people out there as ignorant and stupid as them.

The rot set in when they allowed Assholes On Line out of their walled garden onto what up till then HAD been a really useful communications system basically restricted to research institutions.

I still remember getting my first spam mail. I returned it with a core dump file from a Sun computer. The race between offense and defence has been on ever since.

No. Enlighten me. The first time I was introduced to the internet it was through a GF that I met in a bar because she was bored with the guy she met on the internet. That lasted about 7 months until she met some other guy on the internet. A few years later credit card detectives were in my driveway looking for her.... Last I knew she'd moved to Oklahoma to live with a guy who was stationed there in the army, driving artillery vehicles..... They met on the internet.

Sounds to me like she was spreading Enlightenment, all right.

I met my current GF via the Internet. I met my last GF via the Internet. I met the girlfriend before her via the Internet. I met the girlfriend before her via the Internet. I got divorced. I met my GF before that via the Internet. I didn't meet my wife via the internet.

The Internet has been Berra Berra good to me!

Some people might see it as the government of the world's most powerful superpower being in danger of being taken over by raving loonies.

I prefer to see it as a uniquely American opportunity: Turn it into a reality TV show. The producers of Deadliest Catch could do a great job of it. The behind-the-scenes bitching and conniving, the sex scandals, the social media blunders, the sheer fucking craziness.

At some point you-know-who would have to make a cameo appearance......

The sad part of the clown show is we keep electing them.
Just look at some of them in Office, and the last one Santos,
These are not the Republicans of years past. Yet people go into the booth and elect the lairs, cheats that Rich tell you to vote for, why because "I only vote republicans." It amazes me that women and minorities vote for them, when they want to take away their rights.

Sidestep it. National Popular Vote - can be implemented by the states. It's not far from passing.
It has states with 195 of the 270 electors needed, but it seems like a hard row to hoe to get all the way to 270.

Then there are some pretty big questions as to whether it is constitutional.

The first (and possibly every) election in which it is used (if it passes in enough states) will be an absolute shit show of litigation that will make the last election look like a small claims court dispute.

The Connie says states get to allocate electors the way they want. No other state would have standing as what California does doesn't negate, say, Texas' EC votes.

Unless the SCOTUS says it's unconstitutional in a quick 6-3 decision.

Rep. Jerry Nadler Adds Adam Schiff To The House Judiciary Committee

So much for keeping Adam Schiff off of Congressional Committees. He is now on the Judiciary Committee, where he will make Gym Jordan earn his keep.

Rep. Nadler said in a statement

I am very pleased that most of our outstanding members from last Congress are returning to the Judiciary Committee. Due to their hard work, Democrats passed 110 Judiciary Committee bills through the House and 53 of our bills were signed into law. Under Democratic leadership of the Committee, we enshrined marriage equality in federal law; we enacted the first significant gun safety legislation in a generation; we ensured that survivors of sexual assault and sexual harassment are free to tell their stories and to seek justice in the federal courts; we reauthorized the Violence Against Women Act; we codified lynching as a crime in federal law; we addressed the spate of hate crimes against Asian Americans and others in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic; and we enacted measures to strengthen the antitrust system.

Additionally, I am pleased to welcome Reps. Schiff and Ivey to the House Judiciary Committee. Each have a unique set of experiences and skills that will be major assets to the committee as we fight to protect the rights, freedoms and privacies of the American people. I look forward to working alongside this talented and dedicated group of members again this Congress.

Speaker Kevin McCarthy only has the ability to block Democratic choices for the House Intelligence Committee. McCarthy can’t do anything about Schiff serving on the Judiciary Committee.

It would take a majority vote of the full House to remove Democratic Reps. Schiff, Swalwell, and Omar from their committee assignments, and members of the Republican caucus have already said that they would vote no if such a resolution was brought to the floor.

Florida Republican sends welcome grenades to fellow Congress members

Source: The Guardian

A newly elected Florida Republican sent grenades to fellow members of Congress, prompting one aghast Democrat to say “not even George Santos could make this stuff up”.

Stamped with a Republican elephant, the inert projectiles came with a letter in which Mills said: “It is my pleasure to give you a 40mm grenade, made for a Mk19 grenade launcher. They are manufactured in the Sunshine State and first developed in the Vietnam war.

“Let’s come together and get to work on behalf of our constituents.”

As pictures of the grenades spread online, a spokesman for (freshman Cory) Mills told the Washington Post: “Per the letter, the grenades are inert, and were cleared through all security metrics. I just wish they tagged our official account.”
