https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-08-05/who-calls-for-halting-covid-19-vaccine-boosters/100352220

The World Health Organization (WHO) is calling for a halt on COVID-19 vaccine boosters until at least the end of September.

Key points:

  • High-income countries administered around 50 doses for every 100 people in May, and that number has doubled, according to WHO
  • Low-income countries have only been able to administer 1.5 doses for every 100 people, due to lack of supply
  • The White House says it would not heed the call by the WHO to delay providing additional vaccinations

It comes as the gap between vaccinations in wealthy and poor countries widens.

The call for a moratorium is the strongest statement yet from the UN agency at a time when countries deliberate the need for boosters to combat the fast-spreading Delta variant of the coronavirus.

"I understand the concern of all governments to protect their people from the Delta variant. But we cannot accept countries that have already used most of the global supply of vaccines using even more of it," said WHO head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

High-income countries administered around 50 doses for every 100 people in May, and that number has since doubled, according to WHO.

Low-income countries have only been able to administer 1.5 doses for every 100 people, due to lack of supply.

"We need an urgent reversal from the majority of vaccines going to high-income countries to the majority going to low-income countries," Mr Tedros said.

But on Wednesday, the White House said it was still prepared to provide COVID-19 booster shots, if needed, suggesting it would not heed the call by the WHO to delay providing additional vaccinations.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki said the call was a "false choice" and Washington can both provide booster shots, if they are approved for use in the country, and donate excess supplies to other countries.

The United States in July signed a deal with Pfizer and German partner BioNTech to buy 200 million additional doses of their COVID-19 vaccine to help with pediatric vaccination as well as possible booster shots.

Stay up-to-date on the coronavirus outbreak

To counter the spread of the Delta variant, some countries have begun to use or started weighing on the need for booster doses even as scientists debate over whether or not extra shots are needed.

"The fact that we are vaccinating healthy adults with a booster dose of COVID-19 vaccines is a short-sighted way of thinking," said Elin Hoffmann Dahl, infectious diseases medical adviser to Medecins Sans Frontieres' access campaign.

"With the emergence of new variants, if we continue to leave the majority of the world unvaccinated, we will most definitely need adjusted vaccines in the future," Mr Dahl said.

We are shipping a total of 600 million MORE doses see above https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2021/08/03/fact-sheet-president-biden-announces-major-milestone-in-administrations-global-vaccination-efforts-more-than-100-million-u-s-covid-19-vaccine-doses-donated-and-shipped-abroad/ while Australia seems to have found money to pay people 300-500 AUD to get the jab. Not donating that to buy poor countries jabs, eh?
Central Land Council has found the $500 AUD ($370 of your currency), I've not heard of anybody else. Some larger companies are giving a days pay for people to vax but I've not heard of other cash payments as such.

The Central Land Council is a representative body of 90 Aboriginal people elected from communities in the southern half of the Northern Territory. CLC members set policy for the council. The council's functions and rules are specified in the Aboriginal Land Rights Act (NT) 1976 and we follow a code of conduct.

where did you get that figure from?

Today, the President will announce that the U.S. has now donated and shipped more than 110 million doses of its COVID-19 vaccines to more than 60 countries – a major milestone that cements the United States as the global leader in COVID-19 vaccine donations.  According to the United Nations, this is more than the donations of all other countries combined and reflects the generosity of the American spirit.

Six low-and middle-income countries in the Pacific region are set to receive the first batch of COVID-19 vaccines donated by the government of New Zealand in response to global supply constraints.

Fiji, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Timor-Leste, Tonga and Tuvalu will in the coming months benefit from the dose-sharing agreement, signed on Tuesday between New Zealand and the COVAX-facility, when the first allocation of 211,200 of the 1.6 million  AstraZeneca doses are delivered.

Australia will donate 20 million doses of locally made AstraZeneca vaccines to Asian and Pacific nations as part of a global plan to deliver one billion doses to nations seeking urgent help confronting the pandemic.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/covax-donations-astrazeneca-surplus-1.6099072

Canada is donating 17.7 million doses of the AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine to help inoculate people in low- and middle-income countries, federal ministers announced Monday.

International Development Minister Karina Gould and Procurement Minister Anita Anand said the doses are a part of the federal government's advance purchase agreement with the company and would be distributed through COVAX.

Hmm, your population is 15 times ours. and 70 times that of New Zealand

20 million X 15 = 300 million.

Seems like this new State department of your is just as braggadocios as the last one.

A booster should use a different vector than just the viral spike . like other vaccines.  This might provide broader immunity, but at a lower effigacy...  Like smallpox used the cowpox virus...   But this will take way longer to develop and approve.  Maybe the Johonson or the Sputnik that uses a Adeno virus ...even though they just put covid spikes inside that virus.

I was expecting a booster shot and will be monitoring the evolution of the virus and the development of either (just) boosting or incremental shots.

I will also listen to what the RKI, JH and MDs in the family say about it.

It has been and still is a dynamic situation. Today's givens might be tomorrows old news.

Keep yourself on your toes, informed and ready to act when it seems appropiate.

From R&D World.

R&D World Index: Booster shot for coronavirus will be needed - Research & Development World (rdworldonline.com)

Pfizer’s R&D chief last week stated that they continue to believe it is likely that a third booster dose of their COVID-19 vaccine may be needed within six to 12 months after full initial vaccination. Pfizer is expecting to submit their booster shot for emergency use authorization as early as August 2021. The company is starting immunogenicity and safety studies in August to evaluate an updated version of their vaccine which is designed to target the virus’s delta variant. As noted above, Pfizer expects to submit an emergency use authorization for an oral (pill) antiviral by the end of 2021.

What the Anti vax people fail to understand is by not getting vaccinated they are giving the virus the opportunity to mutate, so good luck when you finally get to meet it.

It looks likely that this behavior will mean everyone else may end up getting booster shots now.

Ok small print.

These are your "due to expire" leftovers from overordering one presumes. Generous indeed!
Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth. If they are in-date and usable, use them and don’t complain about free stuff.

We could just throw them away.

That's true, but if countries hadn't massively over ordered in the first place, many of those doses would have been in peoples arms 6 months ago

I'm willing to get a booster, when more of the world gets access to the vaccine and there is credible reporting... like from the CDC and such... that it's got definite benefit.

For now, I think talk of boosters and 3rd shots is kind of getting ahead of ourselves.

iMHO the bright line is already here-  we’re well vaxxed here, and Delta breakthroughs are already happening.  Too many people from outside, or locals traveling internationally.  Plug and play, like Moderna, may be a gamble, but waiting until variants are here?  That’s playing with dice too….

The world problem is less one of supply, and more a problem of distribution and the logistics of the administration of the vaccine. You can’t realistically expect countries like the US to solve all those issues.

We can and do supply vaccines, but getting them in arms is up to the individual countries.

What if the rich man's table is so fucking rich he can eat his cake and buy lots of fresh cakes too?

If we dumped a billion doses all at once on poor countries, as @accnickpoints out, they would waste a lot because of insufficient shot delivery logistics and infrastructure.  That's in other small print too. Sorry if it doesn't fit your slogan of the week.

If I mask, wash my hands, social distance, and get a booster shot maybe I’ll be able to skip my annual flu shot
I learned you can go over a year without getting your teeth cleaned. Floss, floss, floss!

I plan to get my flu shot I get a 10% off my shopping trip coupon at the supermarket.
