Meli's spent time on more Greek islands than she has in country towns in Australia.

It's that level of sublime and determined ignorance that makes her such an expert on what those areas need.

FKT
Yep, goes for a holiday and comes back an expert on Greek culture, language, cooking and fuck knows what else. (I think she's into butt stuff)

When she started fucking with Recidivist about things aboriginal, I just shook my head.

It's interesting how recidivist gets his knickers in a knot and spits the dummy when one provides evidence from The National Library of Australia that refutes his 'weathered stones" comments.

Anyway, i wouldn't be too worried yet about the Ref failing on the opinions of a handful of OLD WHITE AUSTRALIAN men. They are outnumbered by Gen X, Y and Millennials

Dare I say "IT'S TIME"

Probably true. I'm off for another 3 months in April.
Who would want to spend time in Toowoomba?
Certainly not Tree Changers like you.

Yirrkala community at Gove on the gulf was the only well-run place I saw.
They had a total alcohol ban.
People who came back from town drunk had to stay out at the 2km road sign till the next day.
Kids were happy and healthy and all in school. Mandawuy Yunupingu, the lead singer of Yothu Yindi, was the school principal. He did a great job.
I wil second this on first hand knowledge , did a couple of years there .

Yes, Yirrkala was a virtual paradise. No domestic violence, very placid place. Wonderful beach with the coconut palms lining it. Happy people, smiling kids. Wonderful community. The Ladies went happily about town in their bright clothes, chatting as they went. An idyllic environment. Very Caribbean. I have a female former colleague who I hold in very high regard, who grew up in Gove and had adoptive Yolngu "aunties". Her memories of those times were wonderful.

Last time I went there was a different story, sadly.

And Nhulunbuy town beach totally now fenced off - we used to have great bodysurfing times there when the moon was full!

I have always said that Gove was where Darwin should have been built, but if they had built Darwin there, they would have fucked up Gove.

Many fond memories of times in Gove, before the "locals" threatened to throw the Yacht Club out unless they were allowed to drink there. Another world famous (among cruising sailors) establishment ruined.

Sad.

It wasn't perfect. When the Lutheran missionaries departed, the first thing the locals discovered was how good chicken tasted. So the major supply of eggs to Darwin dried up quickly! Pineapples were left to rot in the fields.

I have always felt that Gatjil Djerrkurra was the bloke with the vision to move Yolgnu forward, but sadly he died young. I have not seen a replacement, and unfortunately from personal experience I have to say that Mark Yingilu Guyula is not of the same calibre.

Edit: I should say that, IMHO, the Yolgnu are far and away the brightest and most intelligent of the indigenous tribes. You can see the intelligence shining out of people like Mary Yarrmirr - it's impossible to not be in awe of someone like that. Sorry, but the Walpiri, not so much.

And they're still waiting 35 years later.

Funny you should post that.
A treaty is what the radicals like Lydia Thorpe want.

Somehow, if we cant get agreement that Aboriginal people have the right to a consultative group to parliament, I can't see Australians voting for a treaty.

Thank you for your contribution to this thread. A lot of my opinions are coloured by a single mate who spent 18 months working on projects in the Territory. (A water bottling plant to be owned by the local tribe was one he built). While he is a good mate, everyone has their biases. Some of what you say marries up very closely with what he has talked about.

Pretty much anyone on the piss can be ugly, me included. Except for brazillian girls for some reason...

Right.
The government has listened to the voices from all them mobs.
i posted this report . I think there were 200 communities involved and there were reports from all those communities there for you to read.
Then there's the statement from the heart.
As a matter of interest, have you actually read the statement from the heart published material?
You keep talking about these 200 communities involved. Yet there are only a dozen or so referenced.
Where did you get the 200 communites figure from? Is it another typo from there being 250 people at the gathering?

I've read it a few times now, and still can't figure out what they want to do with the voice? Albo clearly already listens to them, what else is the voice going to achieve?

The referendum is going to cost $160 million plus. I do think that we can demand a better outcome for Albo spending this amount of our money than an underfined 'Voice'.

Meli you have overstepped the mark big time re Recidivist and a few others here today.
Put down the pipe, turn the laptop off and get some sleep.
Hmm. When I see you chastise others for "overstepping the mark" I might.
I have done nothing other than correct misinformation from R
Sadly the way he expresses himself sounds like Kipling praising the fuzzy wuzzies.

Ok I get he may be of a certain generation, but I'm too old to be expected to tolerate the attitudes of men who express themselves like my FIL WRT to Aboriginal people in general.
Regardless of the lies spread by some, I have worked and socialised with for years with people of Aboriginality, from Public servants, to road workers, architects and servicemen living in Melbourne, Sydney, Bairnesdale.

There seems to be an unbridgeable chasm between our notions of respect and how we express respect of others.

Another typo?
Or have you not noticed FKT mentioning that he lives on the Ocean? Moving from Sydney to D'entracasteaux channel and building a boat is the architypical Sea change.

Not only that, I got paid to move.

Nice low & slow ball there for Meli to have a go at - no doubt she's peeking and commenting on posts from people she's put on double-secret ignore, but hypocrisy has never been an issue for her.

Anyway I and my extended family own a 600 acre property in country NSW and I've been pretty much everywhere in country NSW, Victoria and parts of Queensland. Family on the land, past life working in various places on CSIRO projects, I've seen a fair bit. I freely admit that I've NFI how to improve the circumstances of remote communities because everything tried has failed and more radical things are politically impossible ATM and will remain so until a lot more people have died.

Meli hasn't been as far as Ballarat yet has all the answers.

Incidentally I was in & out of Gove quite a bit in the early 80's and quite liked the place but no idea what it's like now. Lot more crocs about apparently.
