The Zombie Fleet

Meanwhile in BC, after a mild overnight gale. (Not my photo).

Still floating, the guy living aboard looks as derelict as the boat collection. With last night's wind, that 3 boat cluster fuck on one anchor dragged a few hundred feet while barely missing several other boats. He's about 30 feet behind me with the current wind direction. Waiting to see how things shake out as the wind shifts. Thankfully the wind shouldn't pick up much until it swings back to the NE and E, which will only endanger a pile of rocks if he drags much more.

I was out exploring this morning and passed a rich source of zombies. Some of them look like they could sink at any moment. A couple of pretty nice-looking cruising boats in the back are starting to look a bit undead too, but I didn't pull in for a closer look. I've seen that movie...

These aren’t even the craziest. Can’t wait for my mooring to be pulled when one of the several listing 50’ ferro deathtraps goes under - and the Feds use that as the excuse to clear the place out.

Outer edge of the swarm, over by the yacht club. Makes for a fun row, fresh horrors every day depending on route of approach.

The government wharf installed a locked gate at the top this month, first time I’ve seen that in BC. :(
WTF??

One of the "red" docks?

How is anyone supposed to use it?

Slobs & assholes with their garbage scows fuck it up for everyone. Look what happened in False Creek because of them.

Maybe a gathering with torches & pitchforks would drive them off when they become a blight?

Yeah, on the Harbour Authority dock beside the boat ramp, it wasn’t there a month ago. It’s sad, I have a great time walking around the still open docks along the coast and chatting up owners of the few interesting boats still around. There was a sweet looking little gaff ketch named Gormenghast I really wanted to get a look at. :(

Given the state of the harbour I’m not surprised, it’s a floating shanty town far more severe than False Creek ever dreamed of being. I have no clue how a locked gate at the top will prevent folks from rowing in at 2am to pillage, mind you. Strikes me as more than a little bit asinine.

I‘m not sure how this ends, but I can’t see it ending well for the handful of legitimate folks with well-kept vessels also on balls out there: even if a slip were available anywhere on the coast in under five years there’s no way I could ever justify the monthly cost of one.

I still don't understand about the Gov. docks - if they are locked like marinas how can they be used? Is the Gov. selling keys to the fishing fleet and water taxis or something?

As to marina costs - tell me about it. I just got my notice for T-Bird in Fisherman's Cove - just shy of $8K for a 30' slip.

Legitimately I have no idea, I guess they're acting as pseudo-marinas now and if you line up a transient slip they issue you a key? All the fishing boats get a key, etc etc.

I'm seeing reports they're putting them on a number of the government docks along VanIsle, pretty f'in sad sign of the times if that's true.

Sounds like you found a boat? Or have you been trying to upgrade?

2021 in Ganges we watched a ~35' sailboat tie up at the float plane dock. They spread out a ton of crap, hung a clothes line and started what looked like extensive engine work. They were still there the following afternoon.

In Astoria, there's a convenient dinghy/day use dock and ramp right down town on the museum pier. There's a big sign explaining how it was paid for by your boating fees for public use. But the Coast Guard is increasingly taking over the pier. They've planted a big sign on the dock "Coast Guard Vessels Only west of this sign." Um... but the tiny bit of the dock EAST of the sign is ALSO full of CG ribs. I've been ignoring the sign.
I hear Guantanamo is warm this time of year?
