Towing rates?

I need to have my 1ton sailboat (already packed, secured, and on a trailer) shipping 400 miles for Annapolis in May. I'm getting quotes of $1.78/mile - $2.25/mile. I've never hired someone to haul for that distance so I am uncertain what competitive rates would be and if I should wait out gas prices or just secure transport now.

Those quotes seem reasonable.

Are you really thinking gas prices will come back down???    WTH.

What is the gross weight of the boat / trailer?

Fifth wheel, gooseneck or tag along hitch?

i.e. how much vehicle is it going to take to haul it?

You can try posting it on USHIP.com and see what you get.  First quotes will be the highest.

You can try to negotiate rate down with a fuel surcharge to be determined by the cost at time of shipment.  Define source for the fuel cost quote and estimated amount required.

I charged $1.50/mile for the first 1,000 miles and $1.00 /mile after that for the past few years when gas prices were around $2.50/gallon. I’d say under $2.00/ mile with fuel prices now and it’s about the same. Tolls, wear and tear are static costs so if fuel prices come down in a few weeks you might save a small amount.
