Does anyone know if there is a better alternative to this rusty pos, maybe in stainless or similar ??

Also, it is supported by a plank across the cockpit seats which is going rotten, probably due to rainwater. Any suggestions for a suitable material to replace it with ? Teak ? Sit it up on some plastic spacers ? Slather it in expoy ?

rustwise that's pretty entry level, question is , does it work and is it effective? if yes then either strip it and get it regalvanised (properly this time) or strip and wirebrush the crap out of it and give it a coat of cold galv or.... strip and wire brush as is , get and keep it covered in lanacote, not swimming in lanacoat just a smear either way its gotta come off, the plank though..really anything you like as long as it's strong enough to do the job and is resilient in longterm outside exposure, epoxy and glass cloth and finish,

Check with Bacon or other used marine hardware shops an see if you can find an old halyard reel winch

Stainless versions readily available but spendy. Freshwater sailing your little old boat, new galvanized is cheap and completely reasonable.
Sail in saltwater, just for shots and giggles, do you know where to find a stainless one. I googled about a bit and didn't succeed.

Can't be bothered stripping it, but cold galvanizing and lanocoating an new one sounds good.

I'm guessing it's for a v21, I used to have a v22. That winch had a clutch. I just replaced it with a non clutch version, pretty cheap but you had to be very careful when lowering the keel.
