I'm in my "hate on people who needlessly start new threads" mood. Why don't you do a fuckin search and bump the other thread on this topic. One thread about the nonexistant trash island is enough.
I think people should keep posting this stuff until

everyone realizes the problem is not nonexistent,

and that people everywhere, especially those who sail,

should be part of the solution.

"... the idea that one of the biggest environmental disasters of our age had been going on outside nearly everyone's awareness piqued our curiosity, so we decided to head out there (the middle of the ocean) and see it for ourselves."

"It would have been some consolation to think that the Garbage Patch was simply the result of careless sailors"

Give me a break.

maybe someone could sell some real-estate on this Pacific Island and raise money for the SA-AC Challenge.

Does it have an airport? someone should look into that.

sorry i'm bringing up a topic AGAIN that is more important that 99.9% of the inane bullshit that usually gets slung around here. it's our playground, we might want to help keep it clean.

Feel free to bring it up, but at least research it properly

Its not a trash island, there's no part of it you could actually 'walk' on.

What it is is disturbing, but every time it is rehashed in this alarmist way it give naysayers opportunity to point out that this mountain of trash filling up a big portion of the pacific doenst actually exist.

What there is is a whole lot of small particles of floating trash, the bits are small enough that most people who sailed through the gyre would not notice them unless they actually picked up a bucket of water, and then the would see all the bits floating just near the surface.

but once again we get treated to the 'floating mountain of trash story' which does nothing to persuade all those who've sailed right through the region and seen nothing at all.

Calling it a toxic garbage island just lead credence to those who dismiss the story as total nonsense.

Research properly report properly and you might get some credibility.

I've been doing my own research on ocean pollution for 30 years or so, and every time I paddle out on a surfboard there's some MFing mylar balloons, cigarette butts, and plastic shopping bags floating around out there. I don't care if these reports are alarmist propaganda or whatever, I don't like surfing amongst some dumbasses cigarette-butt smarm because he's too lazy to flick it into an ash tray. That's enough right there to make me jump on an anti ocean pollution bandwagon no matter what.

And I'm not the only one to say the least. I saw a bunch of West-siders beat the crap out of a group San Jose gangsters for littering their Burger King mess up at 4 mile one time. As it should be.

:p

the point about the 'alarmist' stuff is it ends up just allowing the people who don't want to think about it to ignore it.

if you make an exaggerated claim about the problem its too easy to disprove.. and this allows those who would rather not acknowledge any probelm at all to just dismiss the whole thing.

if you don't believe me refer to all the other SA threads on this topic.

Properly researched and stated its a lot harder to say its not an issue. but if you start talking about 'trash island' its too easy for people to show that it doesn't exist and therefore ignore your whole argument.

Trash layer then? It isn't really much of a secret that the worlds oceans are getting more and more polluted. Anyones whos ever gone surfing or even left their boat in the water for a few days have seen the layer of scum that exists. Personally I would never want to be a diver doing bottoms in most marinas and yacht clubs. And have you ever seen a beach before it is combed or groomed every morning? Might make you think twice before you go jump in.

Some one needs to go and plop a Sailing Anarchy flag on that Island then we can claim it as our own. It'll be the worlds 196 country.

We can have our own olympic team and maybe get a seat at the ISAF table

I think as sailors we all know that this is an issue. Worth bringing up once but you don't have to constantly remind us of what we already know. Power-boaters however, are a different story and need to be reminded every 5 seconds of shit because, if they knew better they would have sailboats. Troll a power boater thread with this
