Going to Aukland area in February for family wedding. My first visit to New Zealand. Looking for travel advice. Love to go for a sail on an F18 would be great - but will sail anything. Like visiting Yacht Clubs - member of several for reciprocity. Non- sail recommendations also welcome.

Sailing in Auckland…
Find Westhaven
Look like a lost sailor
Someone will find you and take you sailing
(Having a carton of beer under your arm helps)
When you do find Westhaven, forget the Squaddy, (aka RNZYS) except to take a peek at the elusive and increasingly irrelevant Am Cup if you really must. Then move on to the social hub of the Auckland sailing scene; the Ponse. (aka Royal Ponsonby)
After that, there's no need to travel any further south than the Bombay Hills, there's nothing to see beyond there...really

Viaduct , iacc & dolphin explorer boats go out daily over summer.
Z pier, a charter boat facility, part of westhaven marina & adjacent to swashbucklers 🍻.
Westhaven , home to rnzys, ponsonby cruising club & a few others.
In the same area you'll find ETNZ, the national maritime museum , AC boats from various campaigns & a heap of quality bars and restaurants.

Guess you have a wedding location already sorted for your friends chug?
If not, the parnell rose 🌹 gardens, just out of town, is a popular spot for this kind of thing.
Have the reception inside, then outside for the photos

As an afterthought & as a matter of coincidence, I just brought this old world wine box as a Xmas gift for someone. If you're here in February looking for a gift shop, place that sells these is 5 mini up the road from those gardens nz$69.00 (wine not included)

Take a bike ride along tamaki drive, it stretches for 10km east of the cbd , starting at the rose gardens , finishing at st heliers, take a backpack of water, sunscreen, oranges & sandwiches and you're set for the day!

Follow-up: what’s the best night of the week and club/marina to pick-up a crewing spot for local beer can stuff

Wednesday nights ( I haven't lived there for 4 years now ) alternate between the
Squadron and Richmond YC. Start time from around 6pm on. Only 100 yards apart. Friday night rum races from the Squadron. Start at 4.30 during daylight saving. If you give them some time at the office you can probably get a ride on any of them. This is at Westhaven right beside the harbour bridge down town. Easy wander, tho it's a bit of a stroll, from the Viaduct or a 5 minute Uber ride
Friday after the rum race at the Squadron - either downstairs in the Dinghy Locker bar or upstairs in the Members Bar - but they let anyone in. Even me.....
