We have a 60 ft rosewood tree that needs to come down in AZ.  Now I am not seeing dollar signs, but all the research I can get from the googly machine is pointing to it being something of a rarity.  So, My question is,

How in the hell do I figure out how much this thing is worth?? Not just google estimates. I mean, $17,000 (Google article) a ton is nothing to spit at so I donno....  We are in the middle of no where basically and all the tree guys know each other.  So I assume when one comes up they are in Cahoots, but Who knows.  They want $1,800 to take it down and it has to go like yesterday so any ideas?  Small yard, retirement community so keeping the big pieces would not be too easy.  Should I call the botanical gardens in Tucson to come up and appraise it??

I had a large black walnut.  Nobody wanted it because they had no idea of what was under the bark.  Hardware from a long ago clothes line?  On the same vein I had an ash boarded out on a portable bandsaw mill and hit nails from an ancient tree stand 10" below the bark.  I bought a few blades for that sawyer that day.

Anny rosewood ist a fine tonal woode, problem is peopel caulle allote of woodes/trees 'rosewood'

3/16" x 8" x 48" woude be valuabelle to musicialle instrumentte mackeres.

Snaggletooth is right about the value to guitar makers. Wood turners, fine furniture makers, etc. pay a bundle for the stuff. Problem is you have much more than anyone would need. Is there a fine hardwoods supply yard in the region? They wouldn't pay market value but would offer a hell of a lot more than the  local tree service who would wind up selling it to the specialty yard for a handsome profit.

"Rosewood" is like saying "Oak".

 What type of Rosewood? In your area I would guess either Zircote, (probably not), Bocote, or Palo Fierro.

None of these is in the Dalbergia family, which is the true "Rosewood".

Zircote, and Bocote are in the "Cordia" family. Palo Fierro is a "Fabaceae".... a leguminous tree, so it would have bean like seed pods.

NONE THE LESS. Depending on how big it is in diameter at chest height, all 3 could be worth some serious money to a veneer company.

You say it's a yard tree, so that causes some problems. Mills, especially veneer mills are loathe to take yard trees because of the potential of running in to old clothes line hooks etc.

 I'd call "Certainly Wood" in East Aurora, NY to see if they can steer you to a logger that can asses the true value of the log.

60' tall doesn't mean much, they'll be looking at the first 8-10' to see if it's worth anything. The second cut might be good for other lumber, and the top is just firewood.

Yeah, the small yard is a limiting factor. I'd suggest calling a local small saw miller (or sawyer, if you're a stickler) if you can find one. They usually can come up with a quick cost/ benefit thingy if there's value in the lumber. Arborists or tree people frequently only look at the cost of removal, not the value of the product.

I had a similar situation several years ago where I thought the cost of  removal of a large number of sick hemlocks on my land might be covered by the value of the timber. Sadly, the miller couldn't find a way to profit due to my property being too narrow to allow a landing and sufficient skidder room and there was a glut of hemlock with little demand. The local arborists wanted a shit ton of money to fall the trees and I'd be responsible for disposal.

Good luck, but if the space is really tight you may have to pay to have someone harvest some really nice firewood.

I've used these guys since they started way back when.

I have asked them about certain trees that I thought might be veneer quality, and they had a fairly local sawyer call me to discuss the trees. I never sold them one, but they have the contacts.

I have two 100-some year old hardwood trees in front of my grandmother's old house near Sloan's Lake. Trunks about 15 feet around, height about 100 feet. Gotta take both down for safety, and their roots have pushed up the sidewalk. I poked around ... I will have to bring in a crane, close off the street for a few hours, crew of four, pull up roots, pull out sidewalk, pour new sidewalk. Price guesstimate for all that, about the price of a newish one-ton Silverado. It would be awesome if I could recover some of that with the wood, but I never even considered it until Shaggy's post.

It is a Sissoo rosewood tree.  Retirement community built on dirt.  Mil picked out tree..  no fences etc.  Pristine 10 ft at least on bottom.. if it is worth something, I can prob drag to Co...  Is it worth it though...

 Sissoo rosewood is a valued wood. native to india and not imported to the US. instrument makers would love to get a hold of that. price is about the same as teak. about 30 to 40 dollars a board foot
