Tropical Wx- Amanda is brewing

The 2014 Eastern Pacific Hurricane Season is just one week old and already we have TD-1 which formed over the last 12 hours or so. Forecast models take it to Tropical Storm strength on the next 12 hours and should this come to pass "Amanda" will be born. Modest Sea Surface Temps near Amanda's path should keep her in the Tropical Storm strength range to a bottom end hurricane if she travels more West then NW during the extended period. She is not near land and for now, only Cabo is on the long term possible landfall list.

As forecast Amanda has been upgraded to the Season's first named storm right in line with the timeline yesterday.

She should remain at Tropical Storm strength for a few days and then become a low end Hurricane Monday.

For now she will pose a threat to fish, birds and the rare mariner in this part of the world.

That is six tonnes of dead anchovies. They died from a lack of oxygen in Marina del Rey, CA last week. I wouldn't want to be Kenny doing bottoms in that crap. Yuck.

Amanda has now reached Category 4 status and while she represents no threat to an land mass at this time this should serve as a harbinger of things to come in the 2014 season. From Hawaii to the Mexican Mainland to Cabo and Southern California, this may prove to be a unique season and I encourage everyone to wax up their surfboards and take full advantage of what is coming our way in this El Nino year.
