A bit dated but on FaceBook Appel has modified the rescue story once again:
"The GPS shows we were sailing when we met the fishing vessel - not adrift - we just wanted to make one phone call to my mom so she could arrange entry into the Japanese waters since we were trying to go to Miinami [sp. Minami] but Typhoon Saola was about to clobber us - so we accepted a 'tow' to get out of the way that the gps shows you would never want to experience"
To repeat for the uninformed, Tropical Storm Saola was upgraded to Typhoon Saola three (2?) days *after* Appel's rescue and was off the coast of Japan, 900 miles northwest of Appel's rescue, and was heading to Alaska. It was a Typhoon for 24 hours, then downgraded back to a Tropical Storm. Saola had, and would have had, absolutely no effect on the SEA NYMPH's voyage no matter what speeds and directions she elected to go. Witness the sea state shown in the rescue videos.
To repeat, the GPS logs onboard the SEA NYMPH shows a seamanlike tow operation after a few starting hiccups, possibly a too short or inelastic towing hawser or too high towing speed originally. The assertion the tow severely damaged the SEA NYMPH and would soon sink her is debunked by Appel's own rescue video in which she points out obviously nonexistent damage, and the fact that the SEA NYMPH was encountered months later still afloat by a passing VOR raceboat.
The desired call to mom is something new and makes no sense at all. US sailboats can enter and clear into Japan upon arrival in almost any port ( 5 closed ports excepted), although contacting the Japanese Coast Guard 24+ hours prior to arrival is recommended. There are no clearance fees, just paperwork. The dogs would be a problem; a 14 day quarantine aboard your vessel and a Health Certificate is required verifying the dog is not infected nor suspected of being infected with Leptospirosis. Dogs require a Rabies Inoculation Certificate valid at least 30 days prior to arrival. Both of which I suspect Appel didn't take care of prior to departing. That's it; much easier than entering many South Pacific Islands.

It happens. When I was working on a cattle ranch we had a cow prolapse and it's even less pretty in person. The standard procedure is to wash down and disinfect the exposed stuff, shove it back in (much trickier than you'd think, hire a vet) and sew up the vulva. It's a judgement call (cows which have prolapsed can return to normal) but we sent her to the monthly auction so she became somebody else's problem.

I do really miss Jenn. She may have been a “little” off in her version of things, but the next voyage could be an epic adventure rivaling our own Rimas the recently “Sighted Knight of the Pacific Ocean” .
