State sanctioned gang acting as expected. It's all of the dangers of having special forces with few (none?) of the controls.

Military special forces also spend literally years and years training, not just on weaponry and combat but on C4 and legalities. I don't think any police depts make that kind of investment in their people.

I wrote a paper in my senior year of high school titled "Secret Police in 20th Century America: The Dangers of Militarization." No one listened!

That was 1989.
Word on the street is that it was an absolute banger. Visionary work.

Blah blah blah!
There was NOTHING in the video showing anything like prop police training

First we both are coming to a conclusion from only what the video shows.
But
Typical police don’t show up with a rifle, that tells there was a level or 2 upgrade in situation.
The perp had a GUN !
The gun was tossed and recovered according to the audio.
Police are trained to use overwhelming force, to the peanut gallery second guesser’s that is not just physical force but tone of commands and body language. If there is the slightest non compliance in a situation like that swift and certain actions must be taken.
The flat foot to the back as the perp tried to get out of the prone position is perfectly acceptable!
The poke with the barrel is perfectly acceptable.
Not sure how you think in those two actions I addressed should have been handled…. I anxiously await your enlightenment
Correct, we are not privy to the lead up. The flat foot to the back is not my concern, nor the poke with the barrel. The two kicks to the back of the head are, he was complying with voice commands. There was no need to kick him in the head.

Except for a 500-fold increase in the amount of military materièl owned by police departments and systematic and rampant militarization of police training across the country. Not much...
Yes ! That is scary!

Soldiers aren't allowed to shoot enemy soldiers who have surrendered.
It happens sometimes anyway. Sometimes when it happens, the soldiers who do it are prosecuted (or fragged).

The basics are the same: good guys don't continue to inflict violence on a helpless former opponent.

Soldiers are trained pursuant to well-thought out policies and curricula instituted by generals and lifelong scholars of military policy and effectiveness. Police are trained pursuant to...whatever local officials think.

I just can’t wrap my head around how this started and escalated. I find myself wondering if one or more of these cops might have had some kind of personal beef with the man they beat to death.

Same here. I'd like to know what they were thinking. The dept seem to be withholding the tapes and audio of the initial pull-over for now, perhaps because it's so deeply incriminating it should be reserved for the moment for charging and trial?? It seems what they did release was to show everybody they were on the case to prevent rioting, and they had enough of that in what they showed.

Was this a case of mistaken identity? They thought this kid was someone else, a set-up beat-down for thug they had targeted, ala the cases of SWAT invading the wrong house only stupider?
