Something I haven't seen mentioned here - the Russian troops in Ukraine are mostly cut off from being resupplied. If this continues for a few months in addition to being low on food and ammo they will have to try and survive the winter in summer gear. It won't end well.

This is quite sad. Huge losses for Ukrainians:

That would likely mean the END of Russia as we know it. To take that step would turn even the Jhynese against putin. I'm not ruling it out, but I've said here for months that even a tactical nuke from russia is not the threat so many think it is. Meh. Pooty however, absolutely DOES want you to think that's a high risk.
The strategic objective of Russia, now, may well be maintaining access to the Black Sea. It's a massive strategic need for Russia as a whole, so best guess is that is where they will, if they can, will really fight. It is also a very tempting prime objective to consider for the Ukrainians. Russia losing access to the Black Sea? That would be something Putin would be unlikely to survive. Everything after that is dominos.

Got a hunch they wouldn't even use nukes there though, but the notion of permanently losing Black Sea access, something all Russians have been damn proud of since the days of Catherine the Great, where their most revered battles in WW2 were fought, brings pause. Best think this shit through, and keep those diplo back-channels open. It is something the Ukrainians might be wise to keep on the table: The old arraignment of Ukraine having Crimea but assuring Russian access.

They would still have black sea coastline even without Crimea, but would lose access to their large base, is it just that base that's the issue, or is the rest of their coast port-less?

The only port they would be left with is Novorossiysk, not very large, not very deep, and about as developed as it can be now. Tripling the commercial traffic and adding military isn't viable. IMO the Russians will fight like hell to keep their traditional access. Losing it would be a black matter for the King who led them to it.

Traditional access ? I thought they stole it from Ukraine in 2014 ?

Some astute analysis of the overall situation:

Think Tucker needs to go and do some actual on the ground reporting of Russias military dominance.
US Passport Check,
Russian Passport Check,
Press credentials check,
Body Armour check,
Rations Check,
Running Shoes-not white. check.
Missed anything?

Now, his video was back on Aug 29, but still. No one would have said Russia was "winning" on Aug 29. Stalemate at a very high cost at best. Why do the morons lap that shit up?

On the other hand:

Ukraine: Russian intelligence officers and military commanders flee Crimea, southern Ukraine

In the Russian-occupied regions of the Crimea and southern Ukraine, Russian proxies, intelligence officers and military commanders have begun to evacuate and “urgently resettle their families” back into Russian territory, the defence intelligence of Ukraine’s military of defence said.

Defence intelligence officials noted that Russian nationals were “secretly trying to sell their homes and to urgently evacuate their relatives from the peninsula”.
