Four Canadian Leos committed today, hopefully more to come later. I hope they go the one at a time Globemaster way. The RAF Globemasters have earned their keep, at one time some folks said, "Canadian Forces can always charter an Antonov for the heavy lifting".

A C5A will carry either two Abrams or one Abrams and two Bradleys.

A C5A can also carry the fuselage of a C-130.

From CNN...

US will send the more modern and lethal version of the Abrams tank to Ukraine, Pentagon says

The US will send the M1A2 Abrams tank to Ukraine, which has significantly upgraded capabilities compared to the earlier M1A1 model.

Deputy Pentagon press secretary Sabrina Singh confirmed Thursday that the M1A2 would be the version of the Abrams provided to the Ukrainians. She said that the US does not “have these tanks available in excess in our US stocks,” and it will take “months to transfer” the tanks to Ukraine.

The M1A2 is a significant upgrade from the older M1A1, mostly due to the fact that the A2 runs on a digital system, as opposed to the analog system of the A1.

It’s “the difference between a plug-in phone – a rotary phone – and that iPhone you’ve got in your hand,” explained retired Army Gen. Robert Abrams, the former commander of US Forces Korea, whose father was the namesake for the 70-ton tank.

US officials announced this week that 31 Abrams tanks would be sent to Ukraine after days of back and forth between the US and its allies. Officials had not yet disclosed which tank variant they would choose, and Army acquisitions chief Doug Bush told reporters on Tuesday that the decision was still being deliberated.

More on the tanks: US President Joe Biden said from the White House on Wednesday that the tanks would “enhance Ukraine’s capacity to defend its territory and achieve its strategic objectives.”

In addition to the digital change with the A2, the newer version of the tank is “significantly” more lethal than the A1, Abrams said. It includes a commander’s independent thermal viewer. Whereas before, only the gunner had a thermal site, now the tank commander has one as well, allowing them to help scan for and identify targets. The digital system also allows the tank crew to run their own onboard diagnostics, Abrams said, instead of waiting for mechanics to run tests to determine any issues that arise.
When it comes down to it, Abrams said, the M1A2 is “far superior in lethality and survivability and mobility” to anything that Russia has on the battlefield.

It’s unclear which variant of the A2 tank, of which there are three, will be chosen. Singh declined to say during the Pentagon briefing Thursday, and Bush declined to say Wednesday.

Bush added that concerns over logistics and maintenance for each variant – which had frequently been cited as a reason the US was hesitant to send the Abrams at all – would not weigh heavily on the decision.

He also explained that the Army does not produce brand new tanks from scratch and has instead been modifying existing older models. “That doesn’t mean it’s easy or fast necessarily," he added, but they don't currently have to be built from scratch.

I’d love it if the Ukes and NATO were creating the opportunity to sandbag the Orks.

Bleed the Russians while drawing them further from the Bakhmutka River, while convincing them the next battle will be a tank battle.

Tanks mean logistics, and those trains make a nice juicy target for HIMARS, especially if the US targeting/battle plan experience from the Gulf Wars is adopted by the Ukrainians.

In those conflicts, US forces got inside our Soviet-armed foes’ OODA loops and devastated them with air power, arty, attack helicopters. By the time MBTs showed up, the enemy were already devastated, demoralized and wanting to give up. Even Bradleys operating without cover of tanks steamrolled Republican Guard MBT columns.

Although Ukraine doesn’t have our ability to dominate battlefield airspace, Patriots are gonna change the dynamic at some point and the Bradleys are a good platform for shootin and skootin’ in the fairly open terrain.

It would be most interesting if NATO were planning to admit Ukraine after the dust settles, so decided to leave some networking capabilities in the platforms being sent. That would enable pretty awesome command and control capabilities.

Sending M1A2s makes that more likely.

Throw some stealthyish drones donated quietly by the west at the right time, and I could foresee Ukraine ruining the Russian bear’s armored logistics train, then following up by committing the Bradleys, Leoprds and Abrams once the Ruskies are demoralized, out of supplies and fragmented.

Tanks mean logistics, and those trains make a nice juicy target for HIMARS and US targeting assistance plus our experience from the Gulf Wars.

The French won't rule out supplying air power. It seems to me to be the next logical step.

I know nothing about warfare. Except that it is quite necessary to win this war. Air power is a thing. Especially now that all of the anti-aircraft batteries sent by the west are in place.

Politically, someone other than Putin can blame him and the Russians can move into a better future. Maybe even McDonald's will come back.

The Soviet Union isn't coming back.

You want demoralised. out of supplies and fragmented I suggest a squad of A10’s flying 24/7 for about a week, those conscripts still alive would be begging for mercy.

USAF ain’t gonna send A10s into contested airspace.

Nah. Use the tools available. A stand off Rivet Joint/Jstars combined with some long range ATACMS +\- a few somewhat deniable advanced drones.

Such an escalation of US support nicely timed with making public more evidence of Russian war crimes would do the job nicely with lower risk.

Just think what Republicans could do with a US pilot in Ruskie hands. That could lose the war right there for Ukraine.

Don’t give Putin a gift he doesn’t deserve.

Ship will get them there in plenty of time.

The USN pre positioning ships have made multiple port calls to Germany and Poland. They take less than a week to make an Atlantic crossing if necessary.

Polish prime minister tells Canadian TV that Warsaw is sending 60 modernized T-72 upgrades in addition to the 14 Leopards to Ukraine. Half of them will be Polish-upgraded PT-91 Twardy.

Poland did already send 260 older T's to Ukraine. So in total more then 320.
US, Netherlands and Czech collaboration will send 90 T 72's to Ukraine.
(Purchased by the Netherlands and U.S. from Czechia, to be upgraded and delivered to Ukraine) Not clear how many delivered, but deliveries is going on for months.
Czechia did send more T's but not clear how many. 35 of them in a Ringtausch with Germany. Even Morocco did send tanks, but not confirmed.

If only more countries on the sideline had put in some effort to send more in the past. As the first tanks were already send in April from Poland. Or prepare tanks to be send just in case... more then half a year lost...
