"I think Russia made the classic mistake of invading another country's territory, so Russia is wrong," Lula told reporters.

"But I still think that when one won't, two won't fight. You have to want peace," he said, adding he had heard very little from either side about finding a peaceful end to the war.

Lula said Brazil would not provide ammunition to Ukraine for German-made Gepard anti-aircraft guns, as reportedly requested by Germany.

It's a shame he's taking this attitude, I wonder if he has an old socialist's fondness for the long-gone Soviet Union. Not constructive IMHO, any country interested in trade, Russia will be a rather poor partner for the forseeable future.

Denying Ukraine ammo for the Gepard is not a nice move as that ammo is in very short short supply and needs to meets pretty thight specs to actually in an AA tank system that can ake down ground hugging jets as well as basic clay shooting (just wrap the clay pidgeons in tin foil for the radar to pick them up and never mind the cost of the rounds fired... )

Today, and in the past years, the production of this ammo is limited to one country of origin, which is Switzerland. Known and praised for their precision engineering, master craftmanship and highest quality products such as guns, cheese, wrist watches, AC yachts, AA ammunitions and highly secretive banking accounts, I think they should try and be just a little more open to helping the western part of Europe in defense of Putin's Russia.

No matter how neutral they want to be, they would be looking at a pretty ugly and violent gang rape from Putin's Russia and newly acquired (old) associates as the the rest of old Europe would be.

Short answer: last year, Lula was not president. He is an ignoramus, and his reaction was his standard "it's the Americans' fault" response. Now he is president, and his advisors have told him that he can no longer say this kind of shit. Besides, Brazil is historically neutral and pacifist, and Russia is holding Brazil by our balls - fertilizers, specifically.

Long answer: Lula is a former steelworker and began his political career as a union leader, somewhat similar to Lech Walesa, with whom he had a long fraternal relationship. He never expressed any great love for the USSR, or communism or socialism (i.e. the socialism behind the iron curtain).

He has never been concerned with ideology or intellectualism. Or scruples. Or true facts. He himself argues that he never said his previous presidency was leftist!

Like a large part of the left (the rotten part), his core ideas are firmly stuck in the 1970s, and he has a deep and pathological anti-American sentiment - the kind that sees American conspiracies everywhere, like in his own arrest for corruption.

He is extremely sectarian, and has a canine loyalty to his tribe, which consists abroad of the likes of Cuba (he was very loyal and a personal friend of Fidel), Venezuela (same with Hugo Chavez), Nicaragua (same with Ortega), the FARC, and his dear friends such as Iran and China - all of which have the US as their main antagonist.

And the Workers' Party is the party owned by Lula. He made sure of this by expelling any form of dissidence or leadership renewal.

That's why the default reaction for him is "it's the Americans' fault". In fact, in the first hours of Russia's invasion of Ukrania, the official Twitter account of the Workers' Party published a formal statement condemning the United States for the invasion!!! It starts with:

"The Workers' Party in the Senate condemns the long-term US policy of aggression against Russia and the continued expansion of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) towards Russia's borders. This is a bellicose policy, which has never been justified within the principles governing Public International Law. This imperialist policy produced the geopolitical framework that explains the current conflict in Ukraine. Such a conflict, it must be stressed, is basically a conflict between the US and Russia. The U.S. does not accept a strong Russia and a China that tends to surpass it economically. However, Russia's recent wager on war, even if partial and with purely military objectives, also attacks International Law and the collective security system crystallized in the UN. Therefore, the Workers' Party in the Senate regrets and condemns this reckless bet on war. "
