Banging in some nails doesn’t make you a carpenter, and carpenters can’t design a cathedral.

Not a perfect analogy, but ya gotta be able to demonstrate relevant prior experience before you’re in charge of big projects.

A lot of vets dig into it after their service, particularly war vets. Their perspective at the time, for all but high ranking officers (and a lot of them too), is through the soda-straw of what was in their direct view and nobody is going to spend the time to give the grunts informative lectures of how the big picture looked.

The famous "thousand yard stare" is significantly formed by a question: "WTF caused it this madness??"
