After the almost non existing winter offensive one conclusion stands for now.
Putin is a military ignoramus directing completely incompetent generals.

300K soldiers went into Ukraine and did not advance much, at high costs. It was cheaper and as effective to call them up to the mobilization office and shoot hem there. Much cheaper then to equip and transport them to Ukraine.
They lost so many man and material in the effort to advance they are now more vulnarable then before the winter. Though they did dig some nice trenches.

So says an anonymous avatar on a sailing forum on the interweb. Some people actually take shit they see on forums and fakebook seriously.

Keep posting, it keeps you from flinging poop at the paying guests.

I have been thinking some more about why China has little, if any, interest in providing materiel support to Russia. I think the conflicts in the Russian Far East (and Chinese North) and the massive loss of face for China mean that China really wants to regain its territory north of the Amur and east of the Ussuri rivers.

The map below shows the situation. The brownish line is the border as established by the Treaty of Nerchinsk in 1689. The coloured areas were ceded to Russia in two treaties c.1860 when the Chinese Empire was enfeebled. It is about one million sq km or about 10% of the area of China, the US, or Canada - or about the size of Egypt but with a much richer resource base. China has had its knickers in a knot over Hong Kong, lost to the British and Taiwan lost to the Japanese during China's 'Century of Humiliation' but certainly has not forgotten about this land. Other than some minor skirmishes along the Amur and Ussuri late in the last century, China was not in a strategic position to challenge Russia for this lost territory. Ukraine may be changing all that.

Great general and tactician, but as usual, too narrow in focus.

Without good AA and fighters, artillery would've been toast.

Without lots of rail cars and ships, there wouldn't be any shells or replacement barrels.

American industry supplied 65% of all military equipment used in WW2 by the US, Russia, and the rest of the allies.

American industry and logistics won the war.

"Artillery is the king of the battlefield, infantry is the queen...and the king puts it where the queen wants it."

Ukraine is asking for a quarter million artillery rounds a month so the news is not great. Everybody abandoned the infrastructure that could produce those WW1 & 2 levels. We fell into a "plinking" mindset with a few smart weapons, and so did to a great extent the Russians. In theory if every bit of HE hits the target that is all you should need...but those things are expensive and assume much fewer combatants and air superiority if not supremacy. A major war in which the ATGMs check the tanks and SAMs and MANPADs check the air forces and fought by proxy with artillery wasn't considered likely, but here we are, and everything old is new again.

While true enough, up to 70% of casualties were caused directly by artillery.

When I was an armor officer, our plan when artillery started dropping was to get the fuck out of there. It’s very unhealthy. ;)
