War profits
The weapons industry, led by Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, and Northrop Grumman are the biggest winners so far, with each of their stocks climbing since the war - Lockheed alone rising 38 per cent.
And that’s only the tip of the iceberg.
President Biden has signed off a military package that clears the way for $858 billion in Pentagon spending and nuclear weapons work at the Department of Energy in 2023 – more than the US paid out at the height of the Cold War.
The $80 billion increase alone from the 2022 Pentagon budget is more than the military budget of any country other than China.
More than half of that $858 billion will go to the US defence industry, with the top 5 – Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, Boeing, General Dynamics, and Northrop Grumman – splitting between $150 billion and $200 billion in Pentagon contracts.
For its part, the Pentagon is preparing to place a number of large orders to replenish the US stockpiles drained of billions of dollars’ worth of weapons and military equipment over the past year.
It’s not the first – nor last time – the “merchants of death” have moved in on a global catastrophe.
