A thought to cheer you up:
This is actually 3 or 4 wars in one. If Russia gets soundly spanked here, the next war where they attack Poland, the one after that where they go after Latvia, the one after that where they go after Finland are all over before they start.
Even more important, the other big country that sees a neighbor ripe for the taking may decide that war is a really bad way to go about it. This war is being analyzed down to the millimeter by China, they may be having second thoughts that an "easy" invasion of Taiwan would be no such thing and victory would come at a very high cost.

I generally agree, that's why I consider current western military intervention in this shit storm as rather black/white, a necessary evil. that's always been my stance, even before day one of the invasion.
but that's entirely separate to my default loathing of pollution, destruction, murder, and death.

You are correct, this is a horror show that should never have happened. Sadly it is happening. I am even sad for Russia in a way. There was a point in time they could well have become just another European country.
If Putin had been a lot smarter and a lot less obsessed with recreating the USSR, they also could have been headed toward at least a better off and more pleasant dictatorship.
If Hitler had quit with the Sudetenland, not been obsessed with Jews, and been happy enough to create a good economy German history would have been very different too.

Defeating Nazi Germany without the Russians rolling in from the east would have taken longer but arguably the aftermath might have been better for Europe.

An astonishing amount of German resources were in the east. My guess for the "Russia is neutral" outcome of the war would have been D-Day happening after a few atomic bombs landing on Germany. I really have no clue if that would have been better or worse.
The other possibility would be the UK caves, which would make an invasion of Europe impossible. The Germans seemed to have been deluded enough to think the UK was really one of their friends and would quit any second, so they would have been open to a neutral UK.

Back to Ukraine, kicking Russia on out of there WILL create a better EU. It sure is making a better NATO, I think the military strategy of "Well we know the phone number of some guy in the Pentagon, what more do you want" will be over for some time to come for one thing!

I don't think the UK would have caved once the US entered the war; unless there was a big shift in politics and Churchill lost and a pro-surrender PM took over (that would not be Neville Chamberlain... he was not in favor of starting a war with Germany for which he deemed England unprepared, never advocated surrender btw).

Once North Africa and Italy and the Middle East were denied Germany, the "soft underbelly" would always have been tempting to non-extreme Hitlerites for a neutral zone and eventual suing for peace. Once D-Day succeeds in establishing an Allied port and a western front, it's game over. Germany did not have the resources anywhere. Steel and oil!

Now back on topic before D'ranger tells us to fuck off: this is the basic slug-fest view of war, which is always oversimplified... but it's certainly not working for Russia and now the alliance is tilting the balance of power toward UKR as more and more support lines up.
