My guess too, is that if UKR takes back Sevastapol then much of the reason for RU to stay engaged gets greatly reduced. It is key to the conflict and so this new 'secure' land bridge too.

Your take might make more sense if Ukraine had invaded Russia and posed an existential threat to Russia. it didn't start that may last year or during earlier incursions in Crimea and the east.
