Its the crippling the EU that is laughable

returning to an original point, from Reuters
" UK defence minister has been tasked with investigating what jets that we may "be able to provide to Ukraine", UK PM Sunak's spokesperson "

As I said earlier, I bet they end up sending some Tornados
There's a good chance the agreement was made prior to Pres Z going to the UK and making his case publicly there.

Agreed. Russia has already responded. I'm a bit unclear though. Are those the same consequences as if we sent tanks? Or arms at all? Or trained Ukranians? Or provided Intel? Being threatened by Russia is like being being savaged by a sheep in wolf's clothing

Gotta say, that article does seem legit given all the detail

I remarked at the time that the US likely was behind blowing the Nord Stream pipelines.
Aye russian Troll is right. We Germans have tried to build something of lasting value with the Russians. Even Lenin realised that Russia and Germany complement and complete each other. Unfortunately the Russians (this generation of Russians?) turned out to be too stupid, greedy and murderous. Above all, they lack the necessary self-confidence.

As I understand it, the reason there is a Canadian Leo in Ukraine now is because of the field mods learned from ISAF that UA can learn from and do their own thing then. It was maybe intended for a museum, so that the field mods could be seen.

Russia just has so much learned helplessness, with alcohol and all that. This is nothing at all anti-Russian on my part. I have a lot of time for Dostoyevsky and Gogol.

World's fucking ending over here in Germany. We went back to horse drawn carts when the war started. Now we have to eat the horses.

I hope we can make it through the winter.

Next summer everything will be better. We'll have basic media competency courses for tin foil hat wearing right wingers.

Until then live will be harsh. Whom should we trust? Random blogs with zero sources or witnesses or the police of denmark and sweden? Two of the most transparent and least corrupt nations on the planet.

It's so hard. Please send your love and prayers.

I am sure life goes on pretty much as normal, but step back and look at the big picture. Sanctions mean that the cost of energy is up and while you may not feel it in your socio- economic group, people are feeling it. German industrialists are eyeing up moving to lower cost countries i.e the US rather than risk paying the projected costs.

How does it feel to be a vassal state of the US btw?

"The recent sharp increase in energy prices has had a significant impact on households’ real disposable income. When assessing the impact of energy price changes on real private consumption, the ratio between the GDP deflator and the private consumption deflator (or between the income and the expenditure deflator) is a useful indicator. This measure of the terms of trade is well founded from a theoretical perspective and captures both direct channels (e.g. consumer prices) and indirect channels (e.g. wages) through which energy prices affect households’ purchasing power.[4] In the euro area, this indicator is negatively correlated with real energy prices and has been declining sharply since the end of 2021, weighing significantly on households’ real disposable income and affecting private consumption"

Energy costs don't matter right?

"Increased energy prices will continue to weigh on real consumer spending over the next quarters. As energy prices and uncertainty have remained high, households’ real disposable income is likely to wane further at the turn of the year, with negative effects on consumer spending, and particularly on durable goods, notwithstanding the likely positive impact of a further easing of supply bottlenecks. Despite its relative resilience to energy price increases, services consumption is also likely to weaken as reopening effects gradually fade. Overall, this points to significantly weaker consumption dynamics in the near term, in line with the December 2022 Eurosystem staff macroeconomic projections for the euro area."

The internet is full of scholarly, detailed, well-written articles that are complete bullshit. But you knew that.

Not saying anything about whether the article is correct or not. Just saying that skepticism should not be abandoned regardless of the source.

Russians and Germans are doing business and dealing with each other on many levels from the top down right now. There are very intelligent and experienced diplomats on both sides working on solutions, remember in geopolitics all that matters are "interests" and when they are common people find a way to resolve any differences. The political narrative is noisy and self interested but there are some very serious people working on this who A.dont want war and B realise the a negotiated agreement is the only solution.

Discussing anything here is for laffs as far as I am concerned because any post is automatically followed by

German industry has been in China for two decades now. I.e. the ship yard in Kiel build their last container ship in 2006.

Dunno man. How does it feel to be psychotic?

Energy prices have been a bitch, that's true. They are already going down, tho, and most germans would rather pay more for energy than live in russia.

How about you visit us here in europe some time instead of reading conspiracy shit all day?

Asking a German about Russia given your history is going to get some pretty polarized opinions right? Living in Russia, how about you not reading the conspiracies- the RU aint interested in taking over. Germany has been crushing it economically since it pretty much runs the EU and we wish you all the best but cant really respect you for cheering on the offshoring of German industry- what are you a banker?

Yes. I used to think Matt Taibbi was a good journalist too.

There is so much scholarly bullshit out there now that even reasonable, intelligent people can be sucked into conspiracy theories.

Dude, you have zero clue. German opinions on Russia are way less extreme than in the US. Your delusional partner slutzsky linked an article a few days ago. 26% of germans see russia as a large threat. In the US it's 66%, although you have a bloody ocean protecting you. You guys are just brainwashed by decades of propaganda, while we had to unify west and east.

Putin ain't gonna stop with ukraine. He himself has stated so multiple times.

We don't run the EU. Germany has less of a vote than it should have by population. Anyway the EU is largely concerned with stuff that everyone agrees on anyway or how bendy bananas can be.

I'm not cheering on anything, but globalization is not caused by the ukraine war. It has been going on for decades.

You are just reading shit into what I've said, because you need to lay off the RWNJ media.

The big picture is that Germans energy hungry export led economy is finished

It will become an American style consumption economy , living on borrowed money , while shoveling pizza

To recap, could be face saving for Russia.

Not under Putin. His domestic credibility, popularity and power rest on that recovery, as he presents it, of Crimea. Lose Crimea and he loses influence, office, wealth, liberty and his life, in that order. There are red lines in shades of grey but retaining Crimea is as red as it gets for him.

So post Putin? I see no reason other than blind optimism to think his successor is more likely to want to make a peace in which Russia has clearly lost Crimea, which is a historical strategic base for them. They are more likely to be an ultra nationalist than a peacemaker.

I do think there will be an agreed peace once both sides have fought to exhaustion and it won’t involve Ukraine recovering Crimea.

it should also be remembered that the modern population of Crimea is Russian. It’s been a pleasant retirement home for Russians. The original Tatar population was long since expelled and is not coming back. There is no realistic reason to believe a majority in Crimea want to belong to a west-facing Ukraine. That is a different situation to most of the rest of pre 2014 Ukraine.

To be clear, this is not what I want, it is what I think most likely to happen.
I don't think so. Remember Russia "lost" Crimea from 91 to 2014 and barely gave a shit. Most of it is but farms. The key was retaining control and access to the port, and the ending the war will improve Putin's general popularity...as long as he has some way to spin a victory of some sort out of it.

Ignoring your poor grasp of economics, let's concentrate on the real fact that western help for Ukraine is not free or without risk or cost.

Nor was it when the UK stood with her allies, and fought not because we had been invaded (as Russia did), but because it was right. Now all of the west does the same against the neo-Nazis of Russia and we know their will be costs.

But even a brief look around the world shows that standing up for the rule of law rather than force, and for freedom rather than tyranny, for democracy rather than corrupt regimes has its own benefits.

The "west" and it's partners in Japan, Aus etc have a standard of living, health and sanitation massively above the repressive states like Russia, NK, China and Syria.

So we'll all take our chances with temporary higher fuel prices thanks. In the long run it's clearly worth it.

I have printing done in China every so often. So have a bunch off associates (account managers) there that I'm friendly with. They seem pretty happy with their standard of living. There are people over by the coast here in Perth who make out little home look like an African hut. But we are happy in our cool, paid for, little place.
What I do know is my Chinese business mates are feel mildly miffed that we in the west keep crapping on about how our standard of living is way ahead of them and they are doing it tough.
We should stop generalizing on this.
