Warning, if you see disturbing videos from the war, Russia is pushing a lot of fake videos and stories on Telegram. Will leak to Twitter (which is forbidden in Russia).
Pushing it on twitter done by the useful idiots. So check source.
The good news is that they are easy to identify. Just look for the name Slug Zitski at the top of the post.

Of course there are well off people in China and Russia. The fact remains that on average people are far better off in the west than either of those
I wo't comment on Russia but I think it would be an exaggeration to say that average people in the West are 'way better off' than in China. I would go with 'somewhat better off'. Say what you will about China, but the economic growth over the last 40 years has been unprecedented in human history with hundreds of millions of people being raised out of poverty to the middle class.

But millions (especially in rural china) are still in great poverty

China do not release trustworthy data on median income (which is the best judge of living standards of the average citizen. However, their GDP per capita is about 25% of "the west", and that itself is much less than the median income in the west. Since the median income in all countries will be well below the mean because of the distorting effects of billionaires and multi-millionaires, the facts clearly point to average people in the west being far better off.

Its worth noting that unemployment benefits in China are massively lower than equivalents in Europe as well.

Yes, they are only better off than a few basket-case western countries like Ukraine (before the war). But how you feel about your wealth is mostly comparative, not absolute. They are massively better off than their parents and consequently feel wealthy.

If you use GDP per capita on a purchasing power basis (see below) they are clearly behind most Western country but I guess it also depends on one's definition of 'far better off'. One important consideration is that China is still a long way away from being as urbanized as Western countries - there is huge room for growth in their service sector. China gets 28% of its GDP from agriculture, the US gets 1%. Rural people, especially those with small farms as is the norm in China, tend to have lower incomes. As farm consolidation continues, something that will take decades, and more people move to cities income levels will increase - made more common by a growing labour shortage and more higher value-added kinds of manufacturing.

I completely agree about things like unemployment and healthcare. For a country that processes to be communist their social support programs are not very good.

I do still think the US may have been the one to pull that off, but with agreement from GER as SH also suggests happened. The timing of what's his name's visit to the WH could be more than coincidental.
Fascinating debate to me.

“Biden is too weak and indecisive to pop a balloon.”

and

”Biden personally directed an attack on four legs of two joint German/Russia-owned pipelines, in relatively shallow water, in an area routinely traversed by American, Danish, German, Norwegian, Swedish, and Russian naval vessels and submarines as well as underwater listening devices and NATO surveillance aircraft.” Pipelines no longer in use in one case and never in use in the other.

Hersh lost his fastball a long time ago.

Seymour Hersch current story - single anonymous source

A story debunking his more recent work.

On Sunday, the legendary investigative journalist Seymour Hersh finally released a story that he has been rumored to have been working on for years: the truth about the killing of Osama bin Laden. According to Hersh's 10,000-word story in the London Review of Books, the official history of bin Laden's death — is a lie.

Hersh's story is amazing to read, alleging a vast American-Pakistani conspiracy to stage the raid and even to fake high-level diplomatic incidents as a sort of cover. But his allegations are largely supported only by two sources, neither of whom has direct knowledge of what happened, both of whom are retired, and one of whom is anonymous. The story is riven with internal contradictions and inconsistencies.

The story simply does not hold up to scrutiny — and, sadly, is in line with Hersh's recent turn away from the investigative reporting that made him famous into unsubstantiated conspiracy theories.

A decade ago, Hersh was one of the most respected investigative journalists on the planet, having broken major stories from the My Lai massacre in 1969 to the Abu Ghraib scandal in 2004.

But more recently, his reports have become less and less credible. He's claimed that much of the US special forces is controlled by secret members of Opus Dei, that the US military flew Iranian terrorists to Nevada for training, and that the 2013 chemical weapons attack in Syria was a "false flag" staged by the government of Turkey. Those reports have had little proof and, rather than being borne out by subsequent investigations, have been either unsubstantiated or outright debunked. A close reading of Hersh's bin Laden story suggests it is likely to suffer the same fate.

------------------------------

Take a step back from all the stories - do you really think NORWAY would help attack a major Russian interest in this way? Their government is not exactly known to stage bombing attacks.

Sanity check #1 - plant the bombs and then trigger them 3 months later?

Option A. You have decided you might want to blow up a pipeline - you wait to plant bombs because if somebody finds the bombs your plot gets discovered

Option B: You want to blow up the pipeline now - you plant bombs and fairly quickly trigger them. Days not months

Sanity check #2

From the Hersch story: "The Biden Administration was doing everything possible to avoid leaks as the planning took place late in 2021 and into the first months of 2022."

So well before the Ukraine invasion this was planned? Does that seem likely? Because at that time the US was worried about European dependence on Russian gas and the US/Norway solution was a covert destruction of their pipeline? i.e. an act of war against an important Russian asset.

It's a bad sign of the times that Ukraine must rely on a private company for crucial infrastructure, especially with erratic Elon as decision maker.

Is it about money? Maybe grifter Elon is trying to make the Pentagon pay him, for UKR's continued access? Can't imagine how providing it for free actually costs him anything real-time. I hope he is not in the RWNJ camp that supports RU - holy crap...

My toy drone picked up 36 satellites at one point today in a flight above my back yard, the count varies between 15 and up. Best I know it is completely passive for just its own GPS tracking and functions like 'return to home.' But maybe the drone capabilities here are far more sophisticated, like as in including instrument recording or even control by satellite.
