No, they do not. 

But there is no good reason why all of our peeps should not have that level of care. (It's pretty good in spite of the attacks from the Reich. They hate it because it works.) 

If I ruled the world, all folks would be able to buy into VA med if they wished, or into any other public system for that matter. 

Generally speaking, the VA has better outcomes at lower costs than either private insurance or Medicare.

If a war is thoroughly unjust, how can it be heroic to wage it? 

You should be penalized on your taxes for being so stupid as to be sucked into the evil enterprise of the Vietnam war, not showered with bennies. 

Full Disclosure - I'm a Vietnam vet too, but it gives me scant pride.

It's really hard to tell.  Having the government in the over-65 market really distorts it.  I retired at 58 and paid for my wife and I until we were 65.  At that point it was impossible to find an insurance plan that offered everything for everybody on demand.

Milking Medicare is a major industry in retirement areas.  We get robocalls offering mobility scooters and various body braces a couple of times a week.  One of my neighbors went to a chiropractor under medicare (covered for a limited period).  At the end of the period he was told that he could get a back brace under Medicare which would cover.  When he got the statement he was amazed that it cost almost $1000 and was paid.

That was a burning question during Viet Nam.  Two cousins who died over there went over all rah rah, but apparently were questioning what the hell they were doing just before they both died in the same action.  Double casket funeral.  Guys just back diving into an adjacent newly excavated grave when the salute caught them unawares.  By the time the reception was over, my Uncle, a cop and WW2 Ranger, who had been, up to that point,  gung ho for the whole thing wound up talking to a Master Sargent for a couple of hours who was just back after his 2nd deployment, and had become disillusioned about the whole thing.  My uncle wound up a mess for the next couple of years.  I was 14 when all that happened.  1966. 
 

Warbird says he served 40 years ago.  Unless he was in for 10 years or more,  and that’s when he retired,  he might have been born as recently as 1962?  Has he said?

Kind of curious. Between 58 and 65 did you have insurance, and if so, what were the premiums like. I'm kind of in the same position right now - can retire but the prospect of paying a bazillion dollars a month for insurance may influence plans.

Btw*: I fully support our men/women who serve and am more than happy to pay taxes to cover their health needs, especially those injured while serving. But it gets a little annoying when certain ex-military people, even those that never even got close to combat, feel like everyone in the country is freeloading off their "sacrifice" and somehow they are more patriotic than the Average Joe.
