Terrible idea...  Have you ever seen sailcloth near an open flame?  The resins in the finish on woven cloths are flammable.  POOF!  Lotsa flames and then it’s gone...

Insurers and fire departments would not be impressed.

Worked in a sail loft many moons ago, unfuckingbelievable how many Suzy Homemakers dropped by with the most fabulous idea to use sailcloth for interior or exterior decor.  Told ‘em they were freakin’ crazy and why, then sent them packing.
Never said anything about near an open flame.  No issues here with that.  Doesn't even factor into the equation.

The wood patio cover and trees in the back yard arent much better.  Insurers and fire marshals might be even more impressed if you attack the inferno-in-the-backyard problem from the other end and reduce the amount of open flames around the flammable materials

YMMV

Geff said that "businesses" are using them in outdoor seating venues.  "Businesses" which provide outdoor seating are typically inspected by fire services.  In most North American urban settings outside of Podunk and Mafialand, certified flammability test results are often required for fabrics used in commercial decor settings.

No matter, carry on with the typical peanut gallery responses of deny and deflect...

If they are serviceable get them to one of used sail outlets, at a rock bottom price. There are a lot of sailors, mostly cruisers, looking for used sails. But if they are truly trashed, and I mean the cloth is falling to pieces, as a lot of old racing sails are, might as well dumpster them. I take off the hardware, if there is any, and put them in the dumpster. Sad, but sails are actually a consumable.

I gave some old large dacron headsails to a mate who has an interior painting contracting business. They take big headsails inside a house, trim it to floor plan  and tape it  up. Instant one piece drop sheet thats reasonably tough.

Thinking the open flame on the restaurant patio isn't much better, but I'm not in the restaurant biz so what do I know

What does one do with used sails? I've tried the dudes that bring them to Hati, they haven't gotten back to me. Thought about the peps that make sail bags; my sail loft can't offer any advice. I've got several old head sails and mains form an X372 with no idea what to do with them, soon they will be dumpster bound.

Hi Mr. Head,

The Haitian donation organization is called Sails for Sustenance and is under new management.  The original founders are still involved and the new Managing Director is Jay Smith, a good friend of mine.  I'm happy to put you in direct contact with him, just DM me.  Jay and team are working hard to streamline some of the obstacles in getting sail donations to Haiti, and have some pretty ambitious plans.  For more info please refer to www.sailsforsustenance.org , and again DM me for direct contact.

I've sold some sails here: https://sailtrader.com/. They are typically J105, J24 and other racing sails with about one season on them. Still in great shape for a club racer or cruiser. There are some racers out there buying full sets of sails nearly every year and looking to sell them to a good home or to re-coop some cost.

Starboard!
I have looked at the bags in that shop in Annapolis.

They are Very expensive but, it looks like a great idea.

Wonder how they get rid of the scrap and  'stained ' sails that... well I will leave it to LR

Sail Safe!
After checking their prices and then getting new 9 1/2oz  cruising sails for my cutter  that will last my time with the boat, I’m glad I went with new.

For folks on a budget or looking to get sails to sailors,  Ebay can move some products.

Craigslist sailboat parts or free stuff categories work
