Myrtle Beach,
Seems to be a very avoidable near miss.
  • Daylight
  • No precipitation
  • Modest winds vs available power
  • Pilot involvement
  • Both vessels owned by same firm
Negligence is the only explanation.

Well, John 8:7.

Looks to me like a somewhat minor misjudgment (HF probably about 50 yards left of track) coupled with unfortunate timing (passing at the bend, Momsen dealing with pilot boat). Good that they communicated & avoided collision.

It does look to me like it’s mostly on HF, CO needs to have words with his OOD & Nav and the squadron commander should have a chat with CO.

Myrtle Beach,
In 60 years of boating, I've done a few dumb things, that might have been embarrassing, but haven't put lives and property at that level of risk.

When you have over 600 crew and$2650E6 in hulls, not to mention the LCAC & othert equipment on an LSD, that requires a level of care beyond that of a recreational boater.

That either ship could get to that point, without early avoidance is symptomatic of something fundamentally missing.

The San Diego Base commander should have a discussion with the Head of which ever amphibious squadron Harpers Ferry is assigned to and review their fitness to continue. The commander of HF should be relieved. One could argue that the Momsen might also be scrutinized for competence; including squadron level command. Failure to do so is indicative of a higher level of incompetence that may rise to Pacific Fleet.

If you don't want to watch 44 minutes the readers digest version is that outbound cut the corner and only saw inbound after they "popped" out from behind the gas tanks. At that point it was easier for inbound to swing wide, which they did.

Even though Monson was broadcasting on AIS? We see the track in the second video.

Outbound should have been on the outside of the curve in the channel, not cutting along the inside.

Guaranteed you'd never see the any of the cruise ships or Hornblowers take that track. It's against the grain.
