It'd be interesting to see how often the winners coincide.

But then there's the fact that many of these guys are successful in numerous similar classes, and have won the Champs of the class being sailed in recent years, but not the current one.

C of Cs should exclude the champion from the class being sailed that year

I think it happens fairly often. Here are the recent stats:

2008 Doug Kaukeinen- Sunfish National Champion - Raced in Sunfish [same class]

2007 Ernesto Rodriguez and Megan Place - Snipe National Champion - Raced in Snipes [same class]

2006 Alan Field, Steve Hunt -Martin 242 Champions - Raced in Y Flyers [What is a Y Flyer?]

2005 Michael Ingham, E. Baker, Delia Ingham - Thistle N Champions - Raced in Flying Scots [Close enough class and ingham rocks]

2004 Michael Funsch, Jay Lurie - Vanguard 15 Champions- Raced in JY 15s [Close enough]

2003 Allen Terhune - Lightning Champions -Raced in MC Scows [Terhune is quick]

2002 Bill Draheim, Natalie Mauney, Scott Mauney - Flying Scots - Raced in Flying Scots [same class]

OK, less than 1/2 the time over the last 7 years.

2007 Ernesto Rodriguez and Megan Place - Snipe National Champion - Raced in Snipes [Same class]

2006 Alan Field, Steve Hunt -Martin 242 Champions - Raced in Y Flyers [What is a Y Flyer?] A scow-like creature from the Midwest, not even like a M242

2005 Michael Ingham, E. Baker, Delia Ingham - Thistle N Champions - Raced in Flying Scots [Close enough class and ingham rocks] Thistle & FS not even close

2004 Michael Funsch, Jay Lurie - Vanguard 15 Champions- Raced in JY 15s [Close enough] but no cigar

2003 Allen Terhune - Lightning Champions -Raced in MC Scows [Terhune is quick]

2002 Bill Draheim, Natalie Mauney, Scott Mauney - Flying Scots - Raced in Flying Scots [Same class]

I ran out of time to add:

And also ignores the fact that all the winners listed are very good sailors, period, no matter what boat they're in.

There might be an advantage here, but not enough to make it a 'beauty pageant'. I'd bet that the other 19 competitors are glad that the current Nat'l champ is there.

I agree it is not a beauty pageant and the winners are all good but it cannot hurt to be in your comfort zone of boat type. Vanguard and JY 15s are damn near close enough and the Scot and Thistle are nowhere near polar opposites.

A Thistle can plane on a semi-regular basis. A planing Scot is as rare as Bigfoot (and just as ugly).
