Any reason there's virtually no V5O discussion?

I saw one thread about Brad Van Liew a few months back, but nothing since...

There's just not a lot of official news coming out about this race. I think we are all just waiting/hoping that it's a successful and intersting event. There's just not a lot of news about other serious campaigns with good boat etc... like Brad's doing. I hope he's not alone out there.

Given the fact that the V5O conflicts with the Route du Rhum (in October) and the Barcelona World Race (in December) it's pretty unlikely the it'll attract in actual Open 60 boats or sailors. Unless they had some reason for doing that on purpose, it seems like generally bad planning/scheduling.

I've been trying to follow, but it's been frustrating. The website rarely gets updated, and it's formatting is really odd, very difficult to read. They had what could've been a cool iPhone app, but it crashes and never seems to work.

Timing is a little bad in terms of conflicting with RdR and the Barcelona race, but I think the Velux was trying to attract a different crowd: using some of the older boats now "eco" 60s, and a staged event rather than a marathon. But I guess they're all trying to scramble for the same sponsorship dollars...

Anyone have any idea what a used boat sells for?

Roxy maybe?

Anywhere between €110,000 and €5000,000 for the older generations. Think Roxy is up for about €200,000.

The race website seems to have had quite a few interesting updates over the last month or so - should be an interesting race.

Route du Rhum is far higher profile, Velux 5 Oceans is a bit of an orphan, a significant challenge for those involved but it's not the "big time".

If there is not a thread on the Figaro Solo which is already racing then there isn't going to be one on the Velux

Well your wrong about the price for used Open 60

ROXY is going for 700,000 Euros

PAKEA BIZKAIA is going for 600,000 Euros

HUGO BOSS is going for 2,000,000 British Pounds

SPIRIT OF WEYMOUTH is going of 300,000 Euros

DELTA DORE is going for 1,500,000 Euros if its still for sale

That's just the price for a few of the Open 60's that are for sale.

Not wrong - I said the older generations.... and it depends on which Roxy you are referring to.

Seems to be getting better now. Nine skippers, only one don't have a boat yet. Pretty old fleet. I believe Brad and Derek are the most experienced and have the newer boats, so should be the favorites. Hope they all make to the start line. Should be an interesting race.

The most recent update from the Spirit of Canada website had this to say from Derek:

The title sponsorship hunt has proven to be daunting and even though we continue to put names on the hull and conduct training sessions thereby reducing the price of the title sponsorship, we have not been able to secure that elusive support. The budget situation is becoming critical as we need to order new sails for delivery before the start. But we are staying focussed on the start line in October. Any suggestions and or referrals with regard to securing potential sponsors are very welcome.
Let's hope he makes it to the start line.

good grief man it seems to be very difficult to secure sponsorship. I feel for the guys.

Any bit $$ helps, but $2milski must be the minimum range of ideal. About a milski into the boat (purchase, refit incl running rigging & new recaro, iPad apps, sails) and a milski to run it around the world with all the in-port shore crew help and transportation plus entry fees. wild guess there. $4milski would be comfortable. I bet nobody gets there.

VDH's red ketch is in!

I love the eco60 idea, refitting these great older boats and giving them a venue. I would have thought that by now we'd have seen 20+ boats entered!

the penguin will be a tough boat to beat - lombard design, best pedigree in the race in my opinion.
