Vendee Globe 2016?

Have a look at the multiple pictures and footage, they all retract towards the hull. They just don't go up through the deck as an extraction point.
On HB the foils do go up trough the deck. But like you said, not as an extraction point
Why would they design the foils in the way if they can't be extracted like that? Seems like a good way of getting yourself some extra windage .
Just look at the profile of them and try and work out how to get them to pass through the deck and extracted.
That's not what I meant- I meant why get them passing through the deck rather than concealed in the hull
angle of the dangle.

They stashed so much secret sauce in that area that they had to do it this way. ;)

Alex had a ~17 minute Q&A in his FB channel a few hours ago.

My favorites:

Carries a Rugby helmet - for use on the inside...

Primary energy source is the engine, after last race 1x watt&sea and solar only as emergency source.

You're welcome! Good fun walking around there!

Interesting to see the new vplp designs with all the different styles of cockpit representing the design ideas of different skippers/teams.

Finally some more information about the 2016 start day coverage.

Most interesting part for most of us should be:

Internet/apps for tablets (iPhone and Androïd)/official social media

From 0745hrs -1000hrs and from 1130hrs to 1230hrs UTC on the official website there is live commentary by Dee Caffari and Alec Wilkinson, you will be able to watch live coverage of the boats leaving the Vendée Globe pontoon, the procession through the harbour entrance and the legendary channel and the start of this eighth Vendée Globe followed by the first few minutes of the race. This live coverage can also be seen on Facebook, Dailymotion (FR and ANG) and Youtube (ANG).
Also a bit of TV:

Alongside all the major French broadcasters and news channels, this momentous occasion will be shown on CNN, NHK Japan, RTS (Switzerland), RTBF (Belgium)… Spain TV3 TBC, Bulgaria BNT, GB and Ireland Premier Sports, Hungary Slovakia and Czech Republic AMC, Italy Mediaset Premium, Macedonia ERA TV, Norway TV Maritim, Russia Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Moldavia, Belarusse, Ocean TV, Serbia, Montenegro, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Macedonia, Sport Klub, Switzerland. Middle East OSN (23 countries) China LE TV.

Dockout coverage will start with Didac Costa (One Planet One Ocean), another boat every 4 minutes ending with Vincent Riou (PRB)

Tracker starts in fast mode, and then slows down.

TRACKER

The first rankings will be posted at 1212hrs UTC with the positions at 1206hrs. The positions will then be updated every six minutes until 1500hrs UTC with the actual positions from 6 minutes earlier. From 1700hrs UTC, the tracker will be in normal race mode with the 1630hrs rankings. Rankings each day are at 04h 08 11h 14 17 21h UTC.

Sounds like an interesting day, if a bit cut down to fit TV schedule. Any idea what Clean is up to?

Haven't found Clean here. Sorry for the lack of reports from my end; been busy with fine tuning on HB, Finistere MerVent, remote office work, and meeting my local "Friends of OP" from the 04/05 race. Rich & GA4 seem pretty dialed in, however we plan a careful going-over of the batteries, etc.

I'm amazed at how every four years the race village in general, press center, and media stuff continues to grow. Quite the scene.

As part of our most ambitious month of coverage in a long, long time, I'm traipsing around Europe until the end of

november to sit down with some of the sport's true leaders to get deep into the biggest issues in sailing.

Our first of three (or four) big events is literally the biggest single event in the entire sport: the start of the Vendee Globe, and with over 2 million attendees and a truly circus-like atmosphere, there's plenty to learn and plenty of people to chat with. Last time around in 2012, we were quite literally the only reporters from our hemisphere, but four years of international PR and a partnership with Keith Mills OSM has definitely improved the situation - I actually drove down from Paris with New York Times sailing editorChris Museler, and several other non-sailing publications (including the Boston Globe) are on the ground in Les Sables D'Olonne doing their thing for the hundreds of thousands of Americans we know are ripe to learn more about this incredible race and its stars: the skippers AND the boats.

While the non-Breton organizers of the Vendee Globe (the one event not owned by IMOCA) have always butted heads with the skippers and Class organization on many matters, they do some things extremely well, and the results of their excellent media relations are easy to see: With some 1100 individually accredited writers and photographers, the Vendee has the largest press corps in attendence of any sailboat race. And while by far the biggest group is French and the Vendee does its best work in French, the message continues to grow to non-French audiences. So while last time, our mission was to provide full English interviews with every departing skipper prior to the start - something no one had ever done - that's no longer necessary, as between the event, the team media, and independent reporters, all of our readers should easily find more information than they need on almost every aspect of the race. If you want to relive the 2012/13 race, the best way to do so is by going through the Vendee thread from start to finish - it'll take some time, but it's a chronological and mostly complete look at every aspect of the race as crowd-sourced by you, the reader. For a quick hit, you can check out the full replay of

The plethora of coverage for the 2016 race doesn't mean we don't want your help or suggestions on what we oughtta cover, and you can reach out directly to me if you have ideas or questions that you aren't getting answers for - hit us up onFacebook, email me directly, or post in one of the threads I'll be starting if you have questions for some of our Podcast and interview subjects.

AS THE WORLD TURNERS

Today's interview with VOR CEO Mark Turner will drop tomorrow, but there's only a few hours left before I talk to one of the most influential men in the sport. Turner started out as an offshore and Mini fan, and turned his relationship with young Ellen Marcarthur into one of the most successful solo campaigns in history. Mark parlayed that success into the Extreme Sailing Series, risking his career on a crazy idea that stadium sailing was the way to solve the sport's long-standing spectator problems. We all know how that turned out, and Mark and the organizations and talent he's created have spread throughout the sport and right to the top of the Volvo Ocean Race and numerous other disciplines.

He's here to check out the modern face of the Vendee before he gets back to Volvo Ocean Race world, and we've got him for 90 minutes this afternoon. What do you want to know from the mouth of one of the real leaders in sailing? Post your questions NOW, and we'll get them answered. To watch our last video chat with Turner from Abu Dhabi a year or two ago, clicky.

On the vendee - Technical details and differences between the boats. Small details as well as large. Who is running what equipment. Sail choices. Polars!

On the vor- entries and status. Can the 65 be retrofitted with foils? What's the optimum fleet size.

Speaking of HB; just off the boat after a charging test with latest settings. All good. Alex has a great boat and a great team.

Working with Jean Le Cam's team on final tuning of that charging system as well. Almost ready for testing after some adjustments...

Great to see so many friends from the past here. For instance Anne Liardet who also finished the race in 04/05. She's been helping JLC also.

Going to do a media thing together with Rich Wilson later today...as the only two American finishers of the race.

Will keep an eye out for McLean's shiny head. He's tall and it's sunny so should be easy to see.

Good vid. Sound not so good. 150kg of dried food shifted with lines for each tack. 1 hour for a tack maneuver also moving 850kg of stuff.

How about some post start interviews with the teams?

Everyone wants to know about the skippers, the boats and whatnot but they can't start without their support structure. After the start they should have time to talk, and maybe some of the post start partying helps to get them talkative.

What I'd really like to know is who is in way over their head and punching far above their weight class? As in dangerously/ignorantly?

It's the anarchy angle we want - not the typical saccharine, everyone's a hero for starting stuff. You know there's 'that guy' but sailors wont talk about it.

What about talent unrealized? Who is punching far below their weight class in terms of failed promise? Who's willing to talk about it? Sailing typically sucks in that regard everyone's-a-hero BS.

I'm not talking Jérémie Bayou's situation (the man is due! so good - I hope his persistence is rewarded), but the guy who holds himself out there as competitive but the other sailors know he has no chance and sponsorship money and opportunity would be better placed on younger more bonfide figaro rockstar or the like?

Who can't break through because no one wants that guy to race because he's too good.....? Whose the guy on the shelf because everyone knows he'd be top three if entered with a good boat?

Good luck digging that up and you know there's THAT guy too. Sailing's clearly not a meritocracy. Follow the money...

Good luck Clean. Also, any help on how best to follow in Canada is a greatly appreciated.

The interview and tour with Seb Josse was great. The amount of effort towards customization is impressive. Moving nearly a ton for each tack is quite the effort. Does anyone know if there are other extended interviews that showcase the layout in such detail as the Seb Josse video?

Wow, the forecast now really looks great for the start :

A north to NW’ly air stream blowing at between 15 and 25 knots out at sea, probably lighter on the coast with squally showers possible around Les Sables d’Olonne. The NW’ly swell should remain below 1m,”
For the race and for the show !

And in fact it also looks good as a window for the JV, Joyon is in code Orange and his heading to Brest :
