Vinyl Wrap

Guys, wonder if you can help me and a mate out...

we were chatting through cool boats and this turned into general 'wow' talk about the graphics and stuff we're seeing on boats these days.

A question arose that neither of us had a scooby-doo on the answer...

Does a Vinyl Wrap impede performance of a boat over say a standard gelcoat or painted finish?

For those who are weight conscious, I think it would add a couple pounds to something like an I14. I can't see it being as fast or smooth as a good gelcoat finish. Vinyl is also prone to tears. Leaving hanging bits to grab the water.

I don't think it would matter much on a 4ktsb but I do think you'd notice on something like an I14.

I like the idea of covering my truck or trailer with a vinyl graphic but I think if I had the money to do something interesting with the hull, I'd probably find someone to airbrush a graphic onto the hull.

All very good questions.

In terms of performance loss it is negligable over a painted hull as the vinyl is lighter than any paint you put on. Obviously it is going to add some weight to a gelcoat hull but as an example, we wrapped a 60ft racing boat a couple of months ago and added about 40 kg of vinyl to a 10000 kg boat, so it isn't very much.

Can't really imagine any legality issues, people put stickers on boats every day of the week and a wrap is just an extension of that.

In fact, there are a number of bigger boats here electing to do a vinyl wrap over painting, because it is significantly cheaper and the results can be amazing!

Clearly you need some specialist people to put it on so if you are interested drop me a line!

Can you say, "I'm looking for sponsors?"

I'm sure if someone wanted to foot the bill, there are a lot of us that would be happy to allow someone else to pony up the cash in trade for showing off their wares. A little extra for new sails wouldn't hurt either.

Could one of you guys post a pic or something??? When I think of vinyl I think of the vinyl letters for boat names. Are you talking about a big sticker for the entire boat? Does it stop at the waterline???
